Claudio C No Name on the Bullet (1959) The Outsider (11,914 – 15 Sep 2025 – by Claudio Carvalho) An outsider arrives in a small town in the Old West. He heads to the local hotel / bar and asks for a room. When he says his name, John Gant (Audie Murphy), the owner freezes since he is a notorious gunslinger. He usually goes to a place hired by someone to kill a local in a duel. Dr. Luke Canfield (Charles Drake), who is a chess fan, talks to Gant and the schedule to play chess later. Meanwhile, the hotel / bar owner spreads the new in town and many residents believe Gant has arrived to kill them since they have guilty conscience. Who might be Gant’s target in the town? “No Name on the Bullet” (1959) is an engaging, but predictable, western directed by Jack Arnold. Audie Murphy in the role of a gunslinger and Charles Drake in the role of a physician have great dialogs throughout the story. Gant’s target becomes clear in a certain moment of the story The interesting part of the plot is the guilty that most of the residents have in their past, each one believing that will be killed by John Gant. My vote is seven. Psychological Thriller. Who is Gant thete to kill? Anyone? Noone? Both men, Gant and the Physician, in the end change roles. Does Gant remain alive. Does he go into hiding. Does he accept his fate? All open questions, but leave us rooting for Gant. Audie is gorgeous, in his blue, cool, persona. Drake is perfect. Great movie! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 11/18/24 Full Review Nick F One of Audie Murphy's best Westerns, with him playing against his usual good guy persona, and to great effect. In No Name On The Bullet he is a hired killer who puts a small town on edge when he refuses to name his intended victim. Murphy was a highly decorated war hero before becoming an actor and his youthful looks made him an unlikely tough guy, but in this film he shows a cold and ruthless persona which enhances the tension as events reach an unpredictable conclusion. A very good traditional Western with Murphy at his best. Reviewed by NICK FLETCHER Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/10/24 Full Review Audience Member One of Audi Murphy’s best absolutely good highly recommend it James Welch, Henderson, Arkansas October 28, 2023 Rated 4 out of 5 stars 10/28/23 Full Review Audience Member Jack Arnold's "No name on the bullet" (1959) is an absolute gem, a true masterpiece that deserve complete recognition. With a budget of approximately $550.000, Jack Arnold created a wonderful western with a soul, much better than other westerns masterpieces like "High noon"(1951) or "Shane" (1952). This film should rank amongst the 5 best westerns ever made, next to "The searchers" (1956) or "Rio Bravo" (1959) and even amongst the 10 best films ever made. Audie Murphy is mesmerising as John Gant, the stranger from nowhere (the shooting title of the movie), with a reputation as a fast gun hired killer. Charles Drake, one of Audie Murphy's best friends, finds here his best role as Dr Luke Canfield, the only man Gant befriends. "No name on the bullet" is a both western and a thriller full of nail biting suspense till the last second of the movie, one of Jack Arnold's masterpieces and definitely Audie Murphy's best film.
