Anna Stanley (Irene Dunne) is married to steelworker James (Charles Bickford). Despite their happy marriage, they struggle financially, until a boarder, Joe Zarcovia (Eric Linden), approaches them with an idea for steel dye. Capitalizing on this idea, the three make a fortune. Then James falls into the arms of the manipulative Margot Van Dearing (Gwili Andre) and demands a divorce, leaving a heartbroken Anna to piece together her shattered life.
