Christina Newland iNews.co.uk This is a worthwhile, twisty little thriller with some genuinely smart ideas within. Rated: 3/5 Sep 18, 2024 Full Review Kevin Maher Times (UK) An act of supernatural vengeance and a whoppingly crude metaphor for the western fashion industry’s shameful history of exploiting southeast Asian labour markets. Guy V Nocebo: A Predictable and Frustrating Misfire. --- Nocebo is an exercise in wasted potential, and not even the faintest shred of suspense or complexity saves it from being a deeply underwhelming experience. The film teases psychological intrigue and moral ambiguity but delivers a narrative so simplistic and misguided it leaves the audience insulted rather than entertained. --- From the outset, the story unfolds with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer, telegraphing every plot point so blatantly that any expectation of a twist—a hallmark of the director’s previous work—is quickly squashed. The result? A film that drags its audience through an excruciatingly obvious narrative with no payoff. You can see the conclusion a mile away, and yet, it arrives without the satisfaction of well-earned resolution or deeper insight. --- Worse still, the moral underpinnings of the story crumble under scrutiny. The central message, ostensibly about exploitation or the misuse of power, is entirely undermined by its own plot mechanics. The “fault” clearly lies with a manager who fails to provide adequate facilities and creates a system destined to collapse under its own flaws—locking doors, monopolizing keys, and ignoring clear signs of deterioration. Yet the film blames everything else but him, skewing its narrative in a way that feels disingenuous and lazy. Instead of critiquing systemic failure, it chooses to moralize about the wrong things, rendering its commentary hollow. --- Add to this the uninspired performances and flat direction, and you’re left with a movie that doesn’t just fail to entertain—it fails to justify its very existence. Nocebo isn’t just bad—it’s frustratingly wrongheaded, offering no twists, no tension, and no truth. Save yourself the time and skip this one. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/15/24 Full Review Goran G Besides the main character acts somewhat reasonably senseless in vulnerable emotional state, as we all are, this movie is actually great and has some fine screenwriting like '-will I ever see you again? -no, but you will hear me again'. I think the lovers of the witchcraft subgenre should definitely see this one. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/13/24 Full Review Murray C Intriguing horror thriller with an interesting pretext and held together by good performances. Although the plot becomes somewhat clunky as it becomes obvious what's going on, the switching between the UK and Fillipino scenes and some genuinely unsettling tropes make this a great watch. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 10/06/24 Full Review Corey K Interesting and original folklore with cool effects Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/05/24 Full Review Addison P Overall, "Nocebo" is a thought-provoking and atmospheric thriller that showcases strong performances and a unique premise. It might not cater to everyone's taste, particularly those looking for straightforward horror, but it undoubtedly leaves a lasting impression with its blend of psychological intrigue and cultural commentary. If you're in the mood for a film that challenges your perceptions and keeps you on edge, "Nocebo" is worth the watch. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 06/23/24 Full Review Nate K Even with a pretty predictable plot, some plot holes and slow pace, it's still a fun movie to watch with its cinematography and acting.
