Archi Sengupta LeisureByte.com Noise (2023) makes some good points about mental health and past traumas but does little else. Rated: 2/5 Jul 8, 2024 Full Review Chris Joyce Movies and Munchies (YouTube) For as stressful as the ambiance of the movie becomes, especially as the story reaches its climax, it also kind of loses the plot and forgets what it’s actually trying to do, leaving us with an ending that feels incomplete, unsatisfying, and rushed. Rated: 2.5/5 Mar 24, 2023 Full Review Brian Costello Common Sense Media It's a slow-burn kind of movie, beautifully directed and skillfully acted. Regrettably, the story doesn't quite live up to its promise. Rated: 3/5 Mar 21, 2023 Full Review Marshall Shaffer Decider The aural landscape resists obviousness with its many layers – commanding attention between scenes when the story itself cannot. Gabriel S Noise sells itself good as a psych thriller and heavy-driven drama flick, but soon someone sold realizes that he is in for something that's not really sure what it wants to be. A horror movie? A mystery thriller? A psychological drama? None? The story follows family Matthias and Liv. They just moved to Matthias's childhood house with their new son Julius to start life big. However, Matthias starts obsessing with his family's past, looking to uncover a conspiracy and clear his father's reputation, while also trying to maintain his sanity at bay. Definitely an interesting premise, who does not like a good "skeletons-in-the-closet" story? Too bad the screenwriters could not give this movie a solid progression and conclusion. The only try-hard redeeming factor about Noise is that the thriller element is present throughout the story. The ultimate mystery is solid and keeps us in the seat eager for the answer. Then, pretty much everything else is low bar. The movie is slow as molasses, little solid action taking place. Even the mystery has a weak progression, the investigation unfolding fragmented and discontinued. A lot of exposition through dialogue, weak dialogue. And a lot of holes, much left open even after the final revelation, if we can even call that scene that. Potential was there, though. Have the writers explored Matthias slow decent into paranoia better, increasing Liv's protagonism, we could have had a better story. Which brings me to character Matthias, the main character, or so it seems. His intentions in the story are fuzzy, and most of them lack background motivation. The only inciting factor being that his mother committed suicide in the lake at the house's property - we get that from the opening scene, so not really a spoiler here; that's really the premise. Everything is subjective, and we get little to no answers. Then there is Liv, Matthias's girlfriend. She had a lot of potential, much left behind. In fact, much of what we end up knowing comes through her actions rather than Matthias, and she is has a solid contribution to the climax too. With a bit of background story and solid motivations, she could have been a better protag than Matthias, easily. Overall, this movie is doomed, avoid it if you can. The story is too shallow, most of the cool mystery and thriller elements absent - there are some jumpscares, though, which ramps up the horror aspect, but those are dismissible -, and the ending leaves too many gaps. Unrecommendable. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 09/07/24 Full Review Melina N Worst movie ever. What a waste of time. I want to erase it from my memory. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 06/17/24 Full Review Audience Member Didn't quite understand the story. Had many loose ends and questions left unanswered in the end. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 06/16/24 Full Review Ronald H A confusing thriller that never coalesces into anything sensible, Noise will leave you wondering what happened and why. Unfortunately, you'll never know. And if squalling babies bother you, you'll be out of your mind before it's halfway over. A Belgian movie, the dialogue is in English, but strangely, some, but not all of it, appears to be dubbed. It's a distinctly unrewarding film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/18/24 Full Review Kevin R Noise is appropriately named for the fact you hear a baby crying throughout this bomb. Don't waste your time.
