NORTH HOLLYWOOD follows Michael (Ryder McLaughlin) as he tries to answer the question every high school kid faces when they graduate: What's next? Michael's best friends already seem to have it figured out; one is going to college, and the other is going to work, but Michael is caught somewhere in between. He's an aspiring professional skateboarder with the talent to back it up, but his blue collar father, Oliver (Vince Vaughn), thinks it's a pipe dream. Oliver wants Michael to either get a college degree and pursue a more conventional career, or join him in the construction business. Over the course of the film Michael is torn in multiple directions: Should he go to college or get a job? Should he chase the career of his dreams or go for the girl? Should he choose the life that his dad wants or the life that he wants? Confronted with the uncertainty of his future-and how it might impact his friends and family-Michael takes steps to build relationships with professional skaters in an effort to forge his own path. While this decision initially deepens the rifts in Michael's personal life, he ultimately gains the support and acceptance he needs from his loved ones--including his dad. Set against the backdrop of the eponymous Los Angeles neighborhood, NORTH HOLLYWOOD is a humorous and poignant slice of life that brings together a cast of established actors with real professional skaters to tell an authentic and personal story.

The result is a lived-in movie that knows its characters by heart and remains ineffably true to them during their most candid moments, but can't muster the momentum it needs to push them towards places they aren't ready to go. Go to Full Review

The comedy in the first film is spontaneous and engaging. Laughlin, scores on his charm rather than boyband looks and rock-hard abs. Eventually, though, the film stalls into a dreary expose of what it takes to succeed. Go to Full Review

Likeable performances that get under the skins of their characters ensure that this is more than a skateboarding film. Like all good sports inspired stories, the sport is secondary to the universal lessons contained within. Go to Full Review

It should provide its target Gen Z skate-boarding audience with a visually great looking coming-of-age film. Go to Full Review

Rachel D Nov 27 Movie wasn’t horrible but parts were confusing. The music for one is very 2018 despite being a movie based in the mid 90s. Like some of the music genre didn’t exist until 2010, it was weird. I was also confused af and I’m probably a rare watcher that noticed (only bc it literally was how my grandmothers kitchen sink down to the wood paneling and the clay art with the Hebrew Jewish prayer next to the sink—but arent they catholic) also the characters were too old to be high schoolers See more Josh P. @zerotimesinfinity Nov 22 Um just no. The straights are not well. See more Mourning K Jul 21 A great drama that everyone who's a skater should watch. I don't think they had to make the main character a complete ass in order to develop the conflict, but hey, that's how they decided to do it. Vince Vaughn was outstanding. I liked it, and so did my fellow viewer. See more Miss S 12/08/2023 This movie is a typical teeny bopper movie about a dumb kid about to go to college who wants to be a pro skater. Basically like every other cookie cutter person in America about to go to college and be a skater. Not funny, not entertaining, just annoying af. Stupid movie. See more Read all reviews
