Michael's best friends already seem to have it figured out; one is going to college, and the other is going to work, but Michael is caught somewhere in between. He's an aspiring professional skateboarder with the talent to back it up, but his blue collar father, Oliver (Vince Vaughn), thinks it's a pipe dream. Oliver wants Michael to either get a college degree and pursue a more conventional career, or join him in the construction business. Over the course of the film Michael is torn in multiple directions: Should he go to college or get a job? Should he chase the career of his dreams or go for the girl? Should he choose the life that his dad wants or the life that he wants? Confronted with the uncertainty of his future-and how it might impact his friends and family-Michael takes steps to build relationships with professional skaters in an effort to forge his own path. While this decision initially deepens the rifts in Michael's personal life, he ultimately gains the support and acceptance he needs from his loved ones--including his dad. Set against the backdrop of the eponymous Los Angeles neighborhood, NORTH HOLLYWOOD is a humorous and poignant slice of life that brings together a cast of established actors with real professional skaters to tell an authentic and personal story. Miles B Decent story, great skating. I don't think they had to make the main character a complete ass in order to develop the conflict, but hey, that's how they decided to do it. Vince Vaughn was outstanding. I liked it, and so did my fellow viewer. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/24 Full Review Miss S This movie is a typical teeny bopper movie about a dumb kid about to go to college who wants to be a pro skater. Basically like every other cookie cutter person in America about to go to college and be a skater. Not funny, not entertaining, just annoying af. Stupid movie. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 12/08/23 Full Review Vance B Might interest some, but not for me. Enjoyed Vince Vaughn, but that was about it. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/28/23 Full Review grant s Would give 0 stars if I could. Mikey Alfred is a culture vulture Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 10/31/22 Full Review Terry S Enlightening and surprisingly enjoyable even for an old dude like me. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/09/22 Full Review wayne m North Hollywood is a coming of drama that is affable and entertaining if a little scattered in its approach. Set in North Hollywood, obviously, we follow Michael, an aspiring skateboarder whose only goal is to become a professional skater. He lives with his blue collar father who would much prefer him to settle down, go to college and then find a solid job. Michael is close with his friends as they enjoy skating purely for pleasure. But when he gravitates to the professional crew nearby he grows away from friends. For Michael it's a crucial time as he has to make choices that will determine his future. All of this is set amongst a culture of parties, skating and good times. It all adds up up a fun film that is not perfect but still very enjoyable. David Ehrlich indieWire The result is a lived-in movie that knows its characters by heart and remains ineffably true to them during their most candid moments, but can't muster the momentum it needs to push them towards places they aren't ready to go. Rated: C May 20, 2021 Full Review James Mottram Radio Times An engaging look at the confusions and conflicts of adolescence. Rated: 3/5 Mar 3, 2022 Full Review Carey-Ann Pawsey Orca Sound While the film does have its flaws, you cannot help be somewhat won over by its enthusiasm. Rated: 3/5 Aug 8, 2021 Full Review Thom Ernst Original Cin The comedy in the first film is spontaneous and engaging. Laughlin, scores on his charm rather than boyband looks and rock-hard abs. Eventually, though, the film stalls into a dreary expose of what it takes to succeed. Rated: B Jul 26, 2021 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Likeable performances that get under the skins of their characters ensure that this is more than a skateboarding film. Like all good sports inspired stories, the sport is secondary to the universal lessons contained within. Rated: 3/5 Jul 22, 2021 Full Review Dennis Schwartz Dennis Schwartz Movie Reviews It should provide its target Gen Z skate-boarding audience with a visually great looking coming-of-age film.
