Audience Member When most people are asked about their favourite Disney film. Some will say Snow White, or Dumbo. Most adults like me who grew up in the Renaissance might say Aladdin or the Lion King. My favourite film is this sequel from a Made-for-Tv franchise. I used to rent it so many times at my local video store. I bought it for 20 bucks on Amazon when VHS tapes were no longer in style. It’s the reason I still have a VCR. I thank whoever uploaded it on YouTube. And yes, every once in a while I suggest the series on the Disney+ recommendations. So why the second film. The stakes are higher with Chip being far away in college. The first one was great. However (and yes I know it was made for TV) it felt very sitcomy with Chip accidentally making himself the popular kid at the school. It’s one of those scenarios where the character accidentally lands themselves into good luck. With the second film, college represents learning responsibilities and becoming an adult. In the introductory scene with his roommate, Chip is being taught how to fit in, to be the ‘cool kid’. Only for Chip to realise that he wants to be himself, he doesn’t want to play into the societal role that is given to him by others. In this film we see Chip’s love interest Roberta. To which I did not know she was a Spanish Actress. I remember watching this young thinking she was beautiful. The interesting dynamic between the two was that she was just activated. So much like Chip in the first film, she is not aware of all the social norms. Taking a joke literal and not understanding metaphors. It’s fun to see the experienced Chip, who is still honing his social skills teach Roberta how to not stand out as an Android. Chip also reprograms her to have free will. Yes I’d admit the weak link of this story is the subplot. The scientists that created Roberta sent deceptive floppy discs (remember those) that would install a virus on any competitor that was trying to develop an Android before them. Chip has the disk installed on him which over time corrupts his CPU. So the third act turns into a rush to save Chip, which has some nice elements too it. Now this is where the kid in me comes out, I love the two fingers on the pulse to activate the super speed run (when I was little I once put D batteries in my shoes to see if it would help me run fast) using a facial reaction device and the hilarious sound it makes when he plasters on a cheesy smile. I always consider these films as a modern day Pinocchio story. The cool thing about Not Quite is that there were 3 films. So with each film you watch Chip possess more human traits. I always thought Disney should remake these films. The message is strong about being yourselves, you don’t have to sacrifice your true self in order to blend in. Take pride in being yourself. The benefit of these films is that Chip while Chip is learning how to socialise, we see the true nature of those he is talking to. From the two bros that try to scheme him in Poker, the roommate desperate for being the coolest kid on campus to the smugness of the scientists. I want to end it by saying this. Movies are subjective, sure it’s socially acceptable to say Citizen Kane is the greatest movie of all time. But I guarantee a percentage of those people, never seen the movie or probably though the movie was alright but have to cop to the fact of what the general census says about the movie. This is one of favourites. I enjoyed it as a kid and still as an adult.
