A successful advertising executive, David Basner (Tom Hanks), is working on a project that could make him partner at his company. When his parents suddenly end their 36-year marriage, he is thrown into the role of caregiver, dealing with his delicate mother, Lorraine (Eva Marie Saint), and his combative father, Max (Jackie Gleason), who provides constant aggravation and bitter remarks. The movie is a bit dated and may not appeal to viewers who don't remember the 80s, but as a film about parents, adult children, and unconditional love, the movie is wonderful and timeless.

David Basner a successful executive advertiser He's hoping to make a project that'll land him a partner position David is also quite the ladykiller He falls for the daughter of an ad campaigner named Cheryl Anne But he gets the most shock learning his folks are splitting up after 36 years David then has to choose what matters more when one of them gets very ill; family or career The movie is good comedy and drama even if the two tones don't always gel together The soundtrack is quite memorable Plus Jackie Gleason gives his best final emotional performance of his career while Hanks proves to be able to step into more dramatic acting than the typical comedic roles

Nothing in Common, one of the better films. I remember listening to the soundtrack for it, Richard Marx, Carly Simon and Christopher Cross and you know what, I really like the movie. It sure reminds of the old years. I should really watch it again. Check it out and see for yourself.

The best of Tom Hanks' early movie era (1985-1992), hands down. I like Big, Turner and Hooch, Sleepless in Seattle, Splash, Joe vs The Volcano, and Punchline, but this is the best of his early movies, and made him a contender down the line for Big, Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, etc.

Tom Hanks, a very young Sela Ward, Eva Marie Saint, Hector Elizando, and the late Jackie Gleason A story about drama and comedy directed by Garry Marshall Hanks is David Basner a successful executive advertiser He's hoping to make a project that'll land him a partner position David is also quite the ladykiller He falls for the daughter of an ad campaigner named Cheryl Anne But he gets the most shock learning his folks are splitting up after 36 years Now he's forced to be the caregiver for both mainly his father Max who's very combative with bitter remarks Plus Max was let go from the garment industry after 35 years David then has to choose what matters more when one of them gets very ill; family or career His ex-girlfriend Donna keeps telling him to "grow up" and she can be the emotional support he needs David learns both his job and family have nothing in common much like his folks as he later finds out The movie is good comedy and drama even if the two tones don't always gel together The soundtrack is quite memorable Plus Jackie Gleason gives his best final emotional performance of his career while Hanks proves to be able to step into more dramatic acting than the typical comedic roles
