Sarah Manvel Critic's Notebook What Mr. Chikuma does not surmount is how unpleasant a person Satoru is... It would be difficult to pull off, even if Mr. Chikuma was a good actor. Aug 9, 2018 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member Sometimes important films are not the most enjoyable to watch. Yasutomo Chikuma directs and stars in his own film as a 20 year old young man living alone with his mother in a small appartment. He is what is known as a NEET "Not currently engaged in Employment, Education or Training". It is important for people to understand why these people are not motivated for work or anything outside their own home. They are damaged, they can not just go out there and start life as most people do and they need help. Yasutomo depicts this all to perfect. He stars as Saturo who does not want to work, stays in his room all day playing games and reading manga, he only goes out to buy magazines and junk food at the grocery store. He does not eat proper and does not speak to his mother except when he is upset and takes out his anger on the one person who would do anything for him and truely cares about him. Satoru might seem like an impolite, unmotivated person to anyone who meets him. But he is a troubled young man, insecure and most of all afraid of "the world out there", afraid of people. Ima Boku Wa is no doubt a very important film on an issue which is becoming a bigger problem every day in our society. I hope it will get the attention it deserves and people will watch it.
