Farran Smith Nehme New York Post Few films have opening images more chilling than the ruins of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, or more bleak than the last 10 minutes of "Nuclear Nation." Rated: 3.5/4 Dec 12, 2013 Full Review Ignatiy Vishnevetsky AV Club For the most part, the movie takes an eye-level approach to the disaster, focusing on the experiences of ordinary people living in makeshift shelters and public housing, lining up for food, and returning to their homes in hazmat suits. Rated: B Dec 11, 2013 Full Review Mark Jenkins NPR [Funahashi's] approach is direct, intimate yet respectful, and sometimes as mournful as the stark piano-and-flute score. Dec 11, 2013 Full Review Ron Wilkinson It's Just Movies A minimalist look at the destruction of the city of Futaba in the wake of the meltdown of the Fukushima nuclear plants. Rated: 5/10 Dec 26, 2013 Full Review Noah Berlatsky The Dissolve The result is not exactly riveting cinema....it often seems caught between trying to tell a story...and its recognition that the story it has to tell is no story. Rated: 3/5 Dec 12, 2013 Full Review Ethan Alter Film Journal International Nuclear Nation's anti-nuclear stance is very clear, but it admirably wants viewers to understand its argument instead of shouting it at them. thomas a A saddening documentary about the town of Futaba that no longer exists due to the mishandling of Fukushima by the Japanese government. Even until a year after the filming, there had been very little that had been done by the government to compensate the Futaba residents for their losses. I hope things are better today for those residents. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Well handled documentary about the displaced residents of Futaba in the Fukushima Prefecture in Japan who can't return home due to radiation from the Fukushima nuclear power plants. Focuses a bit narrowly on too few residents, but good despite that. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member critical and heartwarming at the same time, following the lives of a group of townfolks that had given to the society at large, but found themselves being marginalised Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/28/23 Full Review Read all reviews
