Grace Kingsley Los Angeles Times The Nut has the fresnest, most spontaneous, whimsical humor which Fairbanks has presented in a long time. Jun 25, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Nick M A wealthy inventor without an aim in life (apart from knowing who he's going to marry) spends his time inventing all manner of useless gadgets and gizmos. Meanwhile, his girl wants to transform society by opening up the homes of New York's elite to the children of the slums for one hour a day. That will reform them, you see, and magically ensure that they become productive members of polite society. It's a Douglas Fairbanks comedy, so of course there were parts that I liked, but I certainly didn't love it. There were segments I found confusing, and it felt a bit disjointed. They make such a big deal of him being an inventor in the opening scene, which I found highly entertaining, but then once he was working hard to win the hand of his girlfriend it barely came up. It seems natural that this trait that everyone perceived of as a major flaw (it's what makes him a nut, after all) should turn out to be a strength in the end, but after the idea is simply abandoned. Meanwhile, they *loved* their idea of using waxworks figures, but I couldn't wait for those dummies to go away. Too much work for too little payoff. Not his finest picture.
