Critics Consensus

Ben Stiller's sturdy performance gives Nutcrackers some heart, but a clichéd story and indifferent execution make this holiday dramedy about as delightful as getting socks for Christmas.

What Green adds to familiar material is a sense of genuine wildness—and, at times, eerie ritual. He recognizes something tribal about the raising of close siblings, and their near-feral nature adds jolts of humor and, eventually, heartbreak. Go to Full Review

It’s not really a family film, at least not for many families — the home-school lesson tells you why — but it’s not really a grown-up comedy either. It hovers in an uncanny valley, and the tonal swing is unpleasant. Go to Full Review

Stiller has become a deeper actor with age, and he's perfect here: you know he has a good soul, because this is a comedy, and not a dark one, but he keeps you guessing. Go to Full Review

If the contents of Nutcrackers aren’t outright stolen from other, arguably better works, they are certainly hand-me-downs that don’t fit. A refund would be appreciated. Go to Full Review

There is nothing redeeming about this half-hearted drivel. This is absolute garbage that fails to live up to even the lowest of low expectations. Go to Full Review

A delightful, fairly anarchic comedy in the spirit of under-rated ‘80s tales Uncle Buck or Mr. Mom. Go to Full Review

KC . @kaycee 2d Surprised by the bad reviews! This film was one of my favorite watches of the year. Stiller’s character is deeply human, and I loved his patient and nonjudgmental interactions with the children. Speaking of the children, their performances were INCREDIBLE. They were relaxed and natural on camera, leaning into the feral nature of their characters in an authentic and believable way. The cinematography was lovely. Everything about the film felt raw and real, yet infused with the kind hope and tenderness one expects in a holiday movie. I’m guessing people expected a certain type of performance from Stiller. This wasn’t a slapstick comedy. It felt more like The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. He shines in dramatic roles and this was no exception. The one drawback was the "romance" with the social worker, whose character (played by the typically magnetic Linda Cardellini) felt underdeveloped and lacking chemistry. Otherwise a quiet, beautiful film that will stay with me for a long time. See more Devin K Nov 29 Facepalmingly terrible. Second hand embarrassment. Created an account specifically to try and save as many folks as possible from wasting 2 hours of their lives on this movie. Quite literally the worst movie I have ever seen. Unbelievably bad. See more Feb 22 Sure, it's an OK movie to watch in the background while eating Christmas dinner, but this movie sure isn't fun to watch through. The movie follows a man who has to raise a group of bratty nephews for the Christmas season who eventually take up ballet and perform a low-quality rendition of The Nutcracker in the middle of a road. The movie isn't very memorable. Most scenes are incredibly boring and it feels like a chore waiting for them to end. In one scene, the man (his name is Michael Maxwell, but that's a stupid name if I'm being honest) brings all the bratty nephews to some weird Christmas party-type thing, but they end up crashing a golf cart into a pool and are taken home in a dusty ice-cream truck. Throughout the entire scene, it felt like the writers had just given up and thrown a ton of second-hand embarrassment at you instead of actually trying to write a decent joke, and it just felt really out-of-place. The story also didn't make very much sense, and all I could really pick up from it was that these kids made a crappy version of The Nutcracker for their dad who died... of something, I guess. Anyways, if you like crappy reality shows, you're the only one who might barely enjoy this movie. See more Read all reviews
