What to Know

Critics Consensus

Ben Stiller's sturdy performance gives Nutcrackers some heart, but a clichéd story and indifferent execution make this holiday dramedy about as delightful as getting socks for Christmas.

Jesse Hassenger AV Club What Green adds to familiar material is a sense of genuine wildness—and, at times, eerie ritual. He recognizes something tribal about the raising of close siblings, and their near-feral nature adds jolts of humor and, eventually, heartbreak. Rated: B Dec 12, 2024 Full Review Alissa Wilkinson New York Times It’s not really a family film, at least not for many families — the home-school lesson tells you why — but it’s not really a grown-up comedy either. It hovers in an uncanny valley, and the tonal swing is unpleasant. Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Matt Zoller Seitz RogerEbert.com Stiller has become a deeper actor with age, and he's perfect here: you know he has a good soul, because this is a comedy, and not a dark one, but he keeps you guessing. Rated: 3/4 Dec 2, 2024 Full Review Louisa Moore Screen Zealots There is nothing redeeming about this half-hearted drivel. This is absolute garbage that fails to live up to even the lowest of low expectations. Jan 4, 2025 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz A delightful, fairly anarchic comedy in the spirit of under-rated ‘80s tales Uncle Buck or Mr. Mom. Jan 1, 2025 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies You can sense what the movie is shooting for and you can imagine ways that it might have worked. But the lack of originality, the overreliance on a tired formula, and the uninspired humor keeps the movie from ever earning our investment. Rated: 2/5 Dec 26, 2024 Full Review Read all reviews

Agustina D I loved this movie. Simply delightful 😊 For me, Ben Stiller never fail, loved the 4 brothers performances. A quirky movie full of love and hope ❤️❤️ Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/12/25 Full Review mark p Slow, terrible acting. Weak storyline. Time you won't get back. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 01/06/25 Full Review Mrs M If you have a heart for children, and the ability to understand and embrace their differences, then this is a movie for you. Ben's character is one that is selfish, only concerned about his life only. His sister, the total opposite, full of love, her life full of four eccentric children and a husband who adores her. They embrace their own beliefs and homeschooling their children is one of those beliefs, which allows each of their children to express their own individuality. 👍 👌 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/05/25 Full Review Mat T Ben Stiller was the initial draw for me. I was excited to see him in a movie again. I did not do a lot of research on this movie beforehand but as we were scrolling through movies to watch during Christmas break, this looked like a good one. Part Overboard and part Six Pack, this formula worked for me. I was drawn into this small town world. Mike's oversimplified pull away from the town felt more like a plot from a romantic Christmas movie, but his draw to family outweighed that plot point for me. I didn't hate the ending but it did not seem as plausible as the rest of the movie. I will watch this movie again. It may even make our countdown to Christmas movie list next year. This is worth a watch anytime of the year. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/04/25 Full Review Kelsea C I thought the movie was creative and charming. The kids ballet performance was incredible, and maybe my favorite part of the movie? They were REALLY good dancers for being so young. I didn't expect Ben Stiller's performance so I was surprised and totally impressed at this other type of character he can play. I thought he did amazing. Also he did all his own stunts. I really felt like this movie was misunderstood by critics, and I'm sure it will have a cult following in no time. I felt that way before I even looked up the story behind the filmmaking... which is it's own kind of awesome. <3 Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review John R I thought with Ben Stiller this would be worth a try but I was wrong. It is drawn out much longer than it needs to be, fairly poor acting, low budget feel, and at times a bit cringy. It’s not a movie even if you happen to enjoy it that you’d be able to watch a second time. Early in the movie you may be able to get a chuckle or two but enjoy it if and when you do Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/31/24 Full Review Read all reviews
