Critics Consensus

An outstanding feature debut for director Kleber Mendonça Filho, Neighbouring Sounds takes a delightfully dark -- and wholly absorbing -- look at human nature.

Tony Rayns Sight & Sound It could be the best 'noises-off' movie since Bong Joonho's debut feature Barking Dogs Never Bite (2000), which it in some ways resembles. Nov 3, 2020 Full Review Stephen Dalton The Hollywood Reporter It is a rare film that makes open-ended ambivalence so explosively gripping, but Filho pulls it off with great panache and even greater promise. TM S tedious, uninspired attempt at a slice of life in Recife, Brazil. It has the patina of accuracy but is one long drawn out slog with next to no narrative or meaning. At the very end the revelation that the security guys are actually there to avenge a family death hardly makes up for all the wasted time before. Sometimes films are made that are simply not very good, but they get made anyway. This is one of them. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/28/23 Full Review Martin F It's extremely boring, I'm sorry. The movie does an amazing work to show how security is a primordial point in Brazil. A lot of shots present high fence, security guards despite taking place in a little residential neighborhood but it doesn't stop the characters to be stolen or to enter in other house. The movie seems also to center around socioeconomic classes in Brazil, a lot of scenes shows different situation relevant for a certain class, like this (very long scene) where middle-up classes debates about how to fire their security guard without giving him money despite him working for them for 15 years. On paper is very interesting, and on a technical level the movie is pretty well constructed but damn it is boring! At the end nothing seems to have happened, the scenes barely link to each other and after a mildly eventful finale you feel like you wasted 2 hours on it. That's a shame because I was hooked during two dream sequences that happened in the movie where I thought "finally things get started", but the character wakes up and once again we go back to the bore. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Kim J This are impecable!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/27/22 Full Review Audience Member The contemplative experience is lost in a superficial and extremely pretentious plot to seek prominence in the "sounds around". Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review nefasto r Neighboring sounds, neighboring lights and neighboring class fights. This should be the full title of this realistic look into a Recife street and its people, in Brazil. Overlong, but overall the film is an interesting and artistic view into the sociology and problems of an entire country (and many more). Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member O som ao redor(2012) Kleber Mendonça Filho estabelece uma relação de extrema honestidade e confiança com o espectador.
