Convinced of the futility of all worldly endeavor, young aristocrat Oblomov (Oleg Tabakov) quits his job and effectively retires from life. He rarely leaves his bed, preferring sleep above all else, and the dreams that frequently take him back to his idyllic childhood and beloved mother. His old friend Stoltz (Yuri Bogatryev), who has become a successful businessman, tries to reform him, but Oblamov resists. It's only when he meets the charming Olga (Elena Solovei) that his spirit revives.

Eitan D Such an amazing movie, depicts the best spirit of USSR film making to the dot Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/22 Full Review Audience Member You have to tolerate 1 hour of the movie (kind of) and then movie becomes awesome. Background score (original Music : Casta Diva(19th century) by Vincenzo Bellini) is perfect. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member You have to tolerate 1 hour of the movie (kind of) and then movie becomes awesome. Background score (original Music : Casta Diva(19th century) by Vincenzo Bellini) is perfect. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/04/23 Full Review Audience Member I really enjoyed this movie. I watched it tonight. It is full of culture and romance. It is funny yet full of sorrow. Oleg Tabakov is great. Yelena Solevey is wonderful. What a sweet yet sad story. Worth the watch. I love the memories of his mother. I enjoyed all of the beauty of this older film. Well done. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member This movie makes you feel good about your life. Poor Oblomov didn't have enough ambition to get out of bed. He was incapable of making important decisions or undertaking any significant actions. The movie won the Cannes Jury Prize in 1980. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member An interesting look at the meaning of life. While set in the 19th century (based on the book by Ivan Goncharov) it is still very relevant today. Is life to be just enjoyed or is it about constantly striving to achieve status and accumulating materialistic possessions? The only negative for me was the length. It is a typical European movie (and I'm speaking as a European). Way too drawn out. It did not have to be 2 and a half hours long. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
