When a man having an affair is found dead, suspicion falls on his spouse, Elizabeth Laughton (Valeria Golino), a teacher at a nearby college. Knowing the best way to clear her name is to track down her husband's lover, she hires Ernest Dewalt (Tom Berenger), a cop who left the force due to medical reasons, who accepts the assignment as a means of escaping his own private problems. For Dewalt, the unusual use of an antique gun to kill Laughton's husband is the first sign that something is amiss.
