Anupama Chopra Film Companion October isn't predictable. The film stays true to its tonality. Shoojit and Juhi remain uncompromising and committed to creating a film that has textures like gossamer. Rated: 3.5/5 Aug 28, 2018 Full Review Mike McCahill Guardian Matters are steadied, just, by Sircar's quiet sensitivity towards tiny signs of life. Rated: 3/5 Apr 13, 2018 Full Review Rohan Naahar The Indian Express October is an aggressively weird film that would be considered ahead of its time even if it were released now. Oct 21, 2022 Full Review Saibal Chatterjee NDTV The exceptional technical attributes of the film serve to bolster Juhi Chaturvedi's fantastic screenplay and dialogue. Rated: 4/5 Jul 27, 2020 Full Review Rahul Desai Film Companion While movies regularly pivot on those who use heartbreak to find passion, October meditates on those who might never discover the difference between the two feelings. Rated: 4/5 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review Nandini Ramnath Scroll.in October is the most ambitious collaboration yet between director Shoojit Sircar and screenwriter Juhi Chaturvedi. Prakhar U One of the best bollywood movies i have ever seen. It will leave a deep impact on you. It's absolutely worth watching. Varun and Banita were just perfect in their roles. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/02/24 Full Review Sarthak B The film's tagline is enough to describe it best, "This is not a Love Story, It is a story about Love." I have never been so emotional in a film's story like this before. Trust me. I grew up watching cheesy bollywood romance dramas and I will always have a soft spot for those kinds of movies which give you a cozy feeling and assure you that eventually, you will find someone that will grab your hand from the darkness and introduce you to the light. But as romantic as that sounds, I never quite experienced it while watching a movie; except for this one. The movie is based on the concept of bringing people with severe brain injuries back to their normal lives by talking to them and the spiritual exercises related to it. And my god, does the film stay true to this. Even with minimal dialogues but with exceptional camera angles and silent scenes, the film manages to convey a boatload of emotions. I don't want to spoil the story for you so just please experience it for yourself when you see it because believe me, it is heartwarming and heartbreaking at the same time and one that is sure to make you cry like a baby (I cried for almost the entirety of the second half so please believe me on this). The acting is just phenomenal. I have always admired Varun Dhawan for his skills as an actor but I can understand why he gets a lot of hate from the public for only doing comedic roles but here's the thing, if you don't show up for his serious and dramatic roles, he is bound to do commercial and comedic roles to stay in the business. So, it's upto us that we don't ruin his career. Now, Varun Dhawan in this film just proves all those haters wrong so hard that they can't even point one bad thing out from this role. His expressions and dialogue delivery are on a rollercoaster of changes throughout this film and you feel every bit of it, he is my new addition to the list of literally me characters that I have always admired. Banita Sandhu although does not have much to do in this film (you will understand what I'm trying to say when you see it) but she does a good job for the part she's given and establishes herself as one who's in this game not just for the sake of being in the game but contributing something to it as a whole. The music in this film is also one thing to look out for. It is unconventional for a bollywood film to not have songs but this film benefits from it. By not having any songs, the movie manages to keep your attention to the subject matter it wants you to understand and connect you with the characters to the fullest which I loved. The background score by Shantanu Moitra which is just beautiful and sad at the same time (on loop for the upcoming week). The cinematography in this film is also just great! I loved how Shoojit Sircar and Avik Mukhopadhyay choose to have wide shots of characters just doing their normal day-to-day chores or just sitting, walking, talking instead of close-up shots. It gave me a feeling that I myself was present in the situation which enhanced my experience and emotions. This film has one of the best endings I have ever seen in a film. It is added to my list of best endings possible in a film. And no, it is not heartbreaking just because it's realistic, it's actually really heartwarming. Please Please Please watch this film. Also, keep a tissue box beside you and don't let anyone interrupt you while watching this film as you'll want to experience this entire thing in one sitting. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/11/23 Full Review Audience Member I don't know what to say... just one of Varun Dhawan's finest works. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member This is a movie of true love. Conclusion is sad. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Shoojit Sircar's ''October'' is a work of profound grief and subtle emotions. The film left me with pain inside my heart, a relatable core made me spar an uncanny smile, and I grieved after the film's end, just because it's undercurrents moved me. It's a fact that Shoojit is a skilled story-teller. And in this film we get the real sense of poetry. But given that it is so strongly made, so well-written and performed, the long running time and change-of-image-for-a-star fatigue undermines the film's otherwise absolute emotions, These small nitpicking aside, "October" is a thing of beauty. It's leading star Varun Dhawan delivers the best performance of his career since 'Badlapur', and in Geetanjali Rao we have got another distinctive lady to root for. These are the small gifts of the larger picture. Don't miss it! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/25/23 Full Review Audience Member What a correct representation of true, unconditional love. Soul stirring.
