Andrew Sarris Film Comment Magazine It is through its loving attentiveness to words and silences that the movie draws us closer and closer into its universal theme. Jun 20, 2013 Full Review Tom Keogh Seattle Times A visually interesting, well-acted and economical movie that ought to work yet doesn't gel as a complete experience. Rated: 2/4 Oct 20, 2011 Full Review Wesley Morris Boston Globe A quick, quiet movie that distills Lima, Peru, to a downtrodden version of its more dynamic current self. Rated: 3/4 Aug 17, 2011 Full Review Mattie Lucas From the Front Row An unexpected joy that heralds the arrival of two talented new filmmakers I think we will be hearing a great deal more about very soon. Rated: 3/4 Aug 5, 2019 Full Review Ron Wilkinson Monsters and Critics Too rapid a departure from convention will leave audiences adrift in this dark comedy. Audience Member First Peruvian film I've seen. Definitely not disappointed. Immediately engaging characters and settings. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie that should have been better. The parts are just fine, but the whole never brings the parts together to lift it to any more than an average movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 01/12/23 Full Review Audience Member L'affiche dit: "Attendez-vous à un miracle!" :) Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member http://www.clevelandmovieblog.com/2011/08/octubre-august-19th-and-20th-at.html Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/27/23 Full Review Audience Member A movie that should have been better. The parts are just fine, but the whole never brings the parts together to lift it to any more than an average movie. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Audience Member Overall, for a foreign film, it was interesting and visceral. I was expecting more of a "formula" movie - but this was fresh and spiritual too. Set in Lima, Peru with stylistic camera shots of aging buildings and shoddy walls, it brought the poverty and striving of average people to light. The story centers around a self-made loan shark, Clemente, finding his first love and fatherhood in a unique and spiritual way. The "Madonna" figure is used throughout and his unmarried neighbor who takes care of a surprise chld is shown in parades and lighting candles worshiping and hopeful that she can be with the solitary pawnbroker and his unexpected bundle of joy.
