This movie grabs you from the moment Old Henry appears. Tim Blake Nelson delivers another stunning performance as an old, worn out widower with a teenaged son who is chomping at the bit to see what life is like away from their similarly worn out farm. As the story unfolds we begin to understand that Old Henry may not be who he seems to be. It’s a film that anyone who misses the great westerns of days gone past will appreciate and if they’re anything like me they will view multiple times.

Old Henry is a slow-burn Western that proves patience can pay off. The pacing is deliberate and, at times, bordering on daunting, specially for viewers who aren’t naturally drawn to the genre; but the film steadily builds tension through atmosphere and restraint rather than constant action. Tim Blake Nelson delivers a strong, grounded performance that carries the story and makes the eventual reveal genuinely effective. What begins as a quiet, almost minimalist film gradually unfolds into something far more engaging, reframing earlier moments in a smart and satisfying way. The violence is limited but purposeful, and the twist gives the movie a memorable edge. Even as a piece of fan-fiction-adjacent Western storytelling, it works on its own merits. Despite its slow pace, Old Henry is a solid, well-made film that can be appreciated even by those who don’t usually enjoy Westerns.
