Critics Consensus

Stephen Lang is as magnetic as ever, but his finely layered performance isn't quite enough to distract from Old Man's predictable story.

Cath Clarke Guardian An unexceptional psychological horror from director Lucky McKee that feels dated and clunky, with some fairly ropey acting – or maybe that is down to the shaky lines put into the actors’ mouths. Rated: 2/5 May 29, 2023 Full Review Glenn Kenny RogerEbert.com The movie builds up enough steam, and has a sufficient supply of jolts, to make Old Man stick to the ribs at least a little by the time it’s over. Rated: 2.5/4 Oct 14, 2022 Full Review Noel Murray Los Angeles Times A superior example of how flavorful dialogue, talented actors and excellent staging can make something familiar really pop. Oct 14, 2022 Full Review Molly Henery The Blogging Banshee Old Man is a unique thriller with what is arguably the best performance by Stephen Lang to date. Rated: 6/10 Jul 11, 2023 Full Review David Bax Battleship Pretension If you’re looking for a traditional horror movie with reliable frights doled out in a recognizable pattern, well, McKee’s name alone should have been warning enough that you’re in the wrong place. Jun 13, 2023 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film McKee’s camera, which moves around like a living presence and always seems to be on the brink of discovering something terrible, makes it impossible to relax for long. Mark G New to the review scene here but have been living it ever since I was a child, over 40 years ago... Well, my childhood's returning and it's time to start chiming in. I hope you'll enjoy the reads along the way, and I'll always provide my best not to lead astray!!! I no longer read reviews or descriptions of films before experiencing. I will only go in knowing the title, genre, and possibly some of the cast... Although some may say predictable, I would like to suggest that within that sense it captivates the emotional reality of defeat, isolation, guilt, pain, and loneliness with that subtle simplistic perfect hint of fantasy that leads to your own imagination and interpretation. Instead of a "straight road" or a "left or right turn" ahead, it leaves the viewer with plenty of paths and possibilities... A bit tough at times, but this really hit home for myself on so many levels! It's not just another typical "cabin in the woods" horror film!!! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/09/24 Full Review Ricardo d Um bom filme que certamente seria ótimo ver numa peça teatral. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/24 Full Review Scratch K Actually a really good movie but docked it a star because of the excessive profanity. As a Christian it really bothers me to hear God's name in vain. This movie did it excessively and it added nothing to the plot. So why? Why keep saying it? That I find ridiculous Rated 3 out of 5 stars 09/02/24 Full Review E P It's a decent film Stephen Lang is excellent and for me the ending was not expected. I think the critical response is overly harsh and actually think it is quite a clever film in its simplicity especially in today's modern films of crash action. Well done Mr Lang very good portrayal of a haunted man. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/24 Full Review Tim C Slow paced and boring. Stuck in the 'horror' section it has no scares. In a nutshell, this movie stinks. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Jeffrey P Primarily a character study of two characters, with a lot of dialogue and not a lot of development until the final 15 minutes, which were interesting. Maybe better as a stage production. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 11/11/23 Full Review Read all reviews
