David Fear Rolling Stone [An] undeniably moving, unsettling film... Rated: 3.5/5 Feb 15, 2021 Full Review Louise Rugendyke Sydney Morning Herald Their stories have not been told. It's shocking to hear, yet so obvious. And that's what makes On the Record such a compelling watch -- it lays out in the clearest possible terms the ramifications for black women who dare to stand up. Aug 26, 2020 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode & Mayo's Film Review It is told with conviction and rigorous honesty... Aug 19, 2020 Full Review Chauncey K. Robinson People's World It wrangles with the intersectionality of race and gender when it comes to Black women being believed and supported in the face of harassment and sexism. It isn’t a comfortable film to watch, but a necessary one. You literally watch a woman (Drew Dixon among MANY others) discover their voice therefore discovering their place in the world again as they brave sharing their scars for the world to see. The fact that Oprah dropped out of this is baffling to me. Whatever her issue was with the "artistic direction" was not worth trying to shelf the truths of these women. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/22/23 Full Review Audience Member This doc touches on POC women affected by sexual assault in a way that other films haven't. For me - as a white woman - this film dives more deeply into the complex, intermingled, social contracts between men and women, and more specifically between men and women WITHIN minority populations in the US. Aside from the primary focus on sexual assault, power, and race - I was deeply touched by the conversations about what we lose as a society WHEN TALENTED WOMEN DISAPPEAR. I think Drew's story, and her early successes, help us feel the deep implications and loss around this question. At on point Drew talks about her pain. She says her pain and her creativity lived in the same compartment of her coping mechanism - this description of how these traumas live inside and alter the course of a person's life is extremely impactful in how we should think about the effects our actions have on others and society.
