Steven D. Greydanus Decent Films At once delicate and gritty, wistful and deeply satisfying. Rated: A- Oct 29, 2008 Full Review Christopher Orr The New Republic In an era when Hollywood has largely lost the ability to distinguish between romance and sex, Once is the rare film that recognizes that love is no less love for being held in check, it is merely a different kind of love. Sep 18, 2008 Full Review Mark Bourne Film.com Once doesn't plop its emotions on its characters' sleeves, and it trusts us enough to leave some of the best stuff unstated. In other words, it trusts us to know that half the music lies between the notes. Asciai R This film shows how to let go the past and move with your present alongside with the people that will open doors for you and helping you to get your biggest breakthrough. This also shows how music connects two or more people to open up and to be free; to let themselves be themselves. With passion, and the people that supports you, you can get everything you want (even the person that you've lost). The ending is bittersweet for me but overall is so beautifully satisfying. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/17/25 Full Review Andrew M Being generous with 1/2 star! This movie is terrible IMO. I agree with others, singing and music were worse than nails on a chalkboard! Uninteresting characters, poor story and overall a waste of time. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 07/21/25 Full Review Wendy J. Masterpiece! The opening song sends chills up my spine every time I see it. I wore this soundtrack out. Beautiful story through songs. I absolutely loved it! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review Daniel B This movie is a big letdown because ****""SPOILER ALERT****""" they don't get together in the end for apparently no reason, even though you're rooting for them. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 06/19/25 Full Review Stephen C A success in 1 hour and 26 minutes!!!!!!! Rated R for Language!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/07/25 Full Review Fiorella G Once is a refreshingly unpolished indie that strips the musical genre of spectacle and replaces it with sincerity. Director John Carney crafts a love story between two artists that is intimate, restrained, and achingly real. Rather than grand set pieces, Once gives us grainy documentary style footage and organic street level storytelling. The music isn’t ornamental; it’s central to the characters' identities and emotional journeys. Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová’s performances are understated and deeply affecting, with “Falling Slowly” standing out as both a narrative turning point and an Oscar-worthy composition. PS. They actually won an Oscar for it. While the pacing may test the patience of those seeking something that is fast-paced or high climax, Once has emotional authenticity. Its ending, at first glance is unsatisfying. But honestly, it's the most honest moment of the whole film. It is a reminder that not all connections are meant to last, and not all stories end in fairy tales. Carney proves that a compelling narrative doesn’t require high budgets or glossy cinematography. All it takes is heart, truth, and a song worth listening to. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 05/29/25 Full Review Read all reviews
