Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times The movie's concocted out of story ingredients as old as the hills... but it's acted with such grace and good humor that we really care about what happens. Rated: 3/4 Jul 2, 2018 Full Review Time Out Attractive if soft-centred basketball story, a sort of junior Rocky. Jan 26, 2006 Full Review Vincent Canby New York Times It also has some very good sequences that are not at all expected, including the smashing basketball game that concludes the film. Rated: 3.5/5 May 9, 2005 Full Review Steve Warren The Barb (Atlanta) No one... will find a lot to like about One on One. May 6, 2023 Full Review Ruth Batchelor Los Angeles Free Press If Robby Benson's smile doesn't make you melt, you haven't got a heart. Oct 22, 2019 Full Review TV Guide An earnest, mostly believable study of the psychological struggle that can occur between player and coach. Rated: 2/4 Mar 24, 2008 Full Review Read all reviews

S R Almost good. Benson was just so weak an actor that it took away from the story. It also took on so many mature issues that seemed a bit far fetched. Some cheesy basketball, but it sort of worked. Saw on TCM. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/10/23 Full Review antonio s Very good movie, a complete story. Robby Benson's acting, as always, very solid and straight to the point. His character in this movie is very different to the character he played in Ode to Billie Joe, which is the mark of an excellent actor. Not so excellent, however, was G.D. Spradin, who played coach Moreland Smith in a way too close to Senator Pat Geary on The Godfather II for comfort. Overall, a very good movie I highly recommend. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 07/24/23 Full Review Audience Member Robby Benson and Annette O'Toole (what a debut) are very sweet and moving; G.D. Spradlin is effective as the seemingly duped "villain"; almost unbelievably dated in the 1970s complete with Paul Williams music Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 01/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Dated and unwatchable. (First and only viewing - 2/10/2018) Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/09/19 Full Review scott m The 1970's were never so obvious in this movie about a freshman basketball star at odds with his head coach. Robbie Benson writes the movie like he is Pistol Pete. The basketball scenes are dated but okay. Its actually Annette O'Toole that makes this movie good to me. Just gorgeous. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Scrappy story, Visited lots of locations in the first minutes, so many in fact that I spent the first hour of this two hour film trying to decided who were the good guys and who were the bad. The cg of Peter Cushing wasn't too bad, but the cg of Carrie Fisher was awful. Made her look like a hamster! Some future characters made an appearance, albeit briefly. But most of them were new and I found myself not really caring about them or what happened to them. The space fights were very good, but the opening scene "Long, long ago etc" was played vertically and not sloping away as in the other episodes, which seemed strange and a little amateurish. Film spoiled before it even started. Bit of a waste of money really. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/08/23 Full Review Read all reviews
