Critics Consensus

One from the Heart belies its reputation as a flop with Francis Ford Coppola's earnest intentions and technical virtuosity, but not even the director's ardor for the genre is enough to make audiences feel much for these characters.

There’s plenty to enjoy here, especially the sparkling emotional openness of Garr, who is a terrific natural dancer and seems always to be dancing, even when she isn’t. Go to Full Review

A movie that takes a drastic and original approach to the very notion of character, to the essence of subjectivity in cinema. Go to Full Review

It’s the sheer commitment to artificiality that makes One from the Heart an important inspiration for the modern musical, even while it stares backward. Go to Full Review

There are moments of movie magic, such as Nastassja Kinski’s tightrope walk and Garr’s dance with Raul Julia, but they are brief flashes in the midst of flamboyant spectacle and dull characterization. Go to Full Review

One From The Heart straps itself to a neon rocketship of elemental romance rather than taking a boat upriver to documentary-style madness. [It and Apocalypse Now] make a pretty pair, and Heart has things you don’t see in the jungle, Go to Full Review

The original cut is as flawed as it is gorgeous. The Reprise edit is utterly clueless — both introducing continuity errors and clipping out context that really worked about the original version's blue-valentine vibes. Go to Full Review

Joseph 02/26/2024 classy love story in LV but featured in the low end of town. And the best? Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. Wow! See more Alain E @AlainE May 15 Very entertaining and released under the name Francis Coppola (no Ford). I thought it predated Apocalypse Now, but it actually follows it. In essence the director does what he wants. There is a love story, the two protagonists split, but in the end they belong together. There are scenes illuminated with expressionistic use of color because that’s what the director chooses to do. Nastassja Kinski is lovely as a circus girl who in the end cannot replace the hero’s true love. This is not Godfather IV, but far from the complete failure that its meager ticket sales implies. See more Esra Y Mar 20 Cinematography, sets, music absolutely dazzling. Teri Garr is captivating. Unfortunately there is no chemistry whatsoever bw any of the actors. Main romance feels like they hold onto each other out of habit and possessiveness not love. See more santana ! 08/24/2023 one of the best looking films ever See more John A @ExcessMale 08/04/2023 Dazzling, light-hearted, visually ambitious and somewhat experimental. Francis Ford Coppola's 80's financial blunder is far better than any review-reader would expect. See more 01/31/2021 A very underrated Coppola work! Amazing! See more Read all reviews
