What to Know

Critics Consensus

One from the Heart belies its reputation as a flop with Francis Ford Coppola's earnest intentions and technical virtuosity, but not even the director's ardor for the genre is enough to make audiences feel much for these characters.

Peter Bradshaw Guardian There’s plenty to enjoy here, especially the sparkling emotional openness of Garr, who is a terrific natural dancer and seems always to be dancing, even when she isn’t. Rated: 3/5 Feb 14, 2024 Full Review Richard Brody The New Yorker A movie that takes a drastic and original approach to the very notion of character, to the essence of subjectivity in cinema. Jan 19, 2024 Full Review Adam Solomons indieWire It’s the sheer commitment to artificiality that makes One from the Heart an important inspiration for the modern musical, even while it stares backward. Rated: B Sep 1, 2023 Full Review Ray Pride Newcity One From The Heart straps itself to a neon rocketship of elemental romance rather than taking a boat upriver to documentary-style madness. [It and Apocalypse Now] make a pretty pair, and Heart has things you don’t see in the jungle, Rated: 7/10 Jul 2, 2024 Full Review Nick Rogers Midwest Film Journal The original cut is as flawed as it is gorgeous. The Reprise edit is utterly clueless — both introducing continuity errors and clipping out context that really worked about the original version's blue-valentine vibes. Rated: 2.5/5 Jun 24, 2024 Full Review Matt Brunson Film Frenzy Unfortunately, this wasn’t one of those films unfairly panned more for its budget than its actual content (see: Ishtar, Waterworld, etc.) -- this one truly deserved every rotten review that came its way. Joseph classy love story in LV but featured in the low end of town. And the best? Tom Waits and Crystal Gayle. Wow! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review santana ! one of the best looking films ever Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/24/23 Full Review John A Dazzling, light-hearted, visually ambitious and somewhat experimental. Francis Ford Coppola's 80's financial blunder is far better than any review-reader would expect. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 08/04/23 Full Review william k An expensive, audacious, but failed experiment by Francis Ford Coppola, it's visually stunning, but narrative (and music) are simply not quite from the heart; it's all too obviously artificial. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member A very underrated Coppola work! Amazing! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/01/23 Full Review steve g Watched this many years after it was made because Terri Garr is in it. I did not have high expectations and it was a good thing because it was a really horrible movie. Over-directed, no high point, a huge cinematic flop, boring and a complete waste of Terri Garr's talents. She can be so charming and Coppola directed all of her charm right out of the movie. The only high point was seeing Terri Garr but it was a struggle. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Read all reviews
