Bilge Ebiri Spirituality & Health One of Us is a powerful look at how difficult it can be to leave a life that completely shaped and dictated one's worldview. Mar 23, 2020 Full Review Robert Daniels 812filmreviews Filmmakers like Heidi and Rachel, are examples of why more female directors are needed. Rated: 3/4 Aug 27, 2018 Full Review David Edelstein New York Magazine/Vulture They had no interest in making an "objective documentary," although I doubt the Hasidim would have made themselves available to two women with a camera and their own hair. Nov 7, 2017 Full Review Brett Michael Dykes Uproxx This gripping documentary confronts some hard truths about religion: its power to unite and its power to divide. Dec 29, 2021 Full Review Fernanda Solórzano Letras Libres It doesn't critique religion itself but rather the sectarian aspects of this group and how it affects its members. Sheri L The bravery of the people shown in this movie who are escaping the oppression and cruelty of the Hasidic Jewish community in New York is remarkable, inspirational, and commendable. It's so sad that our government cannot (or will not) protect women (and men) living under such oppression and abuse in this community. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/09/23 Full Review Audience Member Very well done documentary showing the inside story of Hasidm with no filtering. Thank you Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review william k Excellent documentary spreads some light into a reclusive and oppressive religious community, while simply giving three examples from members who left. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/24/23 Full Review Audience Member As expected, the tales of people who left the Hasidic community of Brooklyn were sad and, at times, harrowing but there was little exploration of the traditions, beliefs or motives of the community from which they were fleeing. As a result, this documentary never really took off and, apart from the odd moment, shed very little light on the subject matter. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 01/13/23 Full Review Audience Member Outstanding documentary about 3 courageous sojourners who decide to exit their extremely insulated Hasidic Jewish community and enter into the "secular world." The film shows the difficulties and obstacles they face in the transition: Losing that which was familiar and overcoming intense rejection from friends and family. We see Etta losing custody of her 7 children through an unjust court system, influenced by highly-paid Hasidic lawyers who find and use loopholes in US law to ensure the children are kept and raised within the confines of the Hasidic community. Still, with support from FOOTSTEPS and other services, these 3 people eschew traditional Hasidic ways, and make Herculean efforts to be more authentic and true to themselves --- and bring more openness and raw honesty -- into their lives. Worth watching. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/20/23 Full Review Read all reviews
