This latest Andy Griffith outing is a particular disappointment, but no matter when it had come, it would have been just as disappointing. For as comedy, Onionhead is generally about as funny as a crutch and certainly no more inspired.

Onionhead is a disappointing film. It is about a struggling college student decides to join the Coast Guard in 1941. Andy Griffith and Walter Matthau give terrible performances. The screenplay is badly written. Norman Taurog did a horrible job directing this movie. I was not impressed with this motion picture.

Andy Griffith plays a much more complex character than that of Will Stockdale in No Time for Sergeants and Felica Farr is quite enticing as Stella.

Without any doubt, Andy Griffith suffers the big TV hangover when it comes to his career beyond Mayberry. He's a much under-appreciated actor to be sure. He and Walter Matthau drinking together and "debating" the cinnamon roll problem makes seeing this one a must all by itself. Don't listen to the negative critics; see this one.
