In 1940s Brazil, well-liked con artist Max (Edson Celulari) spends his days dreaming of life in the United States and concocting unambitious schemes. He is often helped by Margot (Elba Ramalho), a nightclub singer who is hopelessly devoted to him. When Max meets the beautiful Ludmila (Claudia Ohana), an unlikely criminal mastermind, it's love -- and an illicit partnership -- at first sight. But Ludmila's Nazi-connected father will do anything to curb the affair.
