Owen Gleiberman Entertainment Weekly Rated: F Sep 7, 2011 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times [Carvey is] an accomplished actor who can sell a real character. I wish the screenplay had developed that side a little more, and gone easier on the standard crime stuff. Flash G 11 % approval is way too harsh for this movie. It's a simple but excellent Rom Com film and Dana Carvey carries the film very well with some great humor and there is also a great supporting cast as well. Julia Campbell is a beautiful woman & plays her love interest role perfectly. It was filmed during a time when life seemed much more simple (1990) & I've seen this movie at least a dozen times over the years. If you're looking to watch an academy award winner, this definitely isn't it. But if you're looking to watch a funny & romantic comedy, then this film is highly recommended. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/18/25 Full Review Chris K I truly can't understand why Opportunity Knocks doesn't have higher ratings—it’s a fun, charming film that deserves more love than it's getting! Sure, the story might seem a bit improbable at times, and yes, some of the humor feels like a throwback to classic SNL skits, but that’s part of its charm. This movie is so much more than what critics seem to have made it out to be. As a lifelong fan of Dana Carvey, I was thrilled to see him take on his first starring role during the peak of his SNL fame. It’s true the movie might not have the gravitas or seriousness that some viewers were hoping for, but what people forget is that Carvey was still navigating the transition from TV sketch comedy to leading a feature film. And frankly, considering that, his performance here is solid and entertaining, even if it’s not the serious drama some critics expected. The timing of the jokes is spot on, the chemistry in the love story feels real, and while the ending might stretch the bounds of believability, it still delivers that sweet, feel-good vibe that you can’t help but enjoy. I went to test screenings and the official premiere, and it was a blast to watch with an audience. The joy and laughter were contagious. This movie isn't for those who demand realism or Oscar-caliber performances—if you're seeking that, you might be disappointed. But if you’re like me, and you just want to kick back, escape for a while, and enjoy some lighthearted comedy with some endearing characters, Opportunity Knocks is definitely worth your time. It’s a reminder of a simpler, funnier era of comedy and a love letter to Dana Carvey’s unique style that should be celebrated, not dismissed. Let’s give this movie the attention it deserves! If you’re a fan of classic comedies, enjoy a good laugh, and don’t mind a bit of whimsy, Opportunity Knocks is right up your alley. It’s a true gem that deserves to be rated higher than what it's currently getting on Rotten Tomatoes! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/20/25 Full Review Audience Member Carvey is an unconventional but charming leading man. It foreshadows his "Master Of Disguise Approach." A better supporting cast would be nice but it's fun to watch a young Carvey go for it. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/15/23 Full Review joel h Opportunity Knocks is obviously an attempt to show off the voices and impressions Dana Carvey was doing on Saturday Night Live. Some of the humor hasn't aged that well, but this is still an entertaining con artist movie. This could definitely be the nostalgia glasses talking, though. I loved this movie as a kid, so it was fun to watch it again. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/30/23 Full Review Audience Member Greatest movie of all time. LOU LOU LOU EDDIE EDDIE EDDIE Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/18/23 Full Review Audience Member Con artist breaks into an empty home and is soon mistaken as the housesitter who happens to be a friend of the real homeowner. Carvey shines in his first starring comedy vehicle. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 02/19/23 Full Review Read all reviews
