Betsy Sharkey Los Angeles Times Trials and tribulations in myriad forms are at the center of all five Oscar-nominated documentary short films this year. Rated: 3/5 Feb 8, 2013 Full Review Andrew O'Hehir Salon.com As unreliable as the Academy Awards may be at every possible level, it's a relief to encounter the 2013 Oscar-nominated shorts ... Jan 31, 2013 Full Review Ty Burr Boston Globe If you come to have your eyes opened to tales of human suffering and resilience, you stand to get more than your money's worth. Rated: 3.5/4 Feb 9, 2012 Full Review Robert Denerstein Movie Habit Prepare for an emotional workout Feb 28, 2013 Full Review Laura Clifford Reeling Reviews My personal pick of the five goes to the 10-years-in-the-making "King's Point" about a retirement village where one of filmmaker Sari Gilman's grandparents resided. Rated: B Jan 31, 2013 Full Review Annlee Ellingson Paste Magazine These are certainly important topics worthy of our attention. Keeping that attention, however, is another matter with uneven results. Audience Member On the whole an okay selection. The most moving was MONDAYS AT RACINE. I don't know why exactly, but the pain these ordinary women felt while getting their heads shaved touched me. The most interesting was REDEMPTION. Seeing people subsist largely or even entirely on nickels from bottles and cans was fascinating. If I were to pick one of these for an Oscar it would be this one. The one they will probably pick is INOCENTE, about an often homeless girl artist and her strained relationship with her illegal alien mother. It was okay. KINGS POINT was better. The dramas of old Floridians is sustainable for 50 minutes, but no more. OPEN HEART was okay, but not gripping. Sick kids should be, and Africa is an exciting and exotic locale, but the kids did not SEEM sick, and much of the time was spent in a nice Western-style (and financed) hospital. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/14/23 Full Review Audience Member Mondays at Racine ***** Inocente ***** Kings Point **** Redemption *** Open Heart ** Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/20/23 Full Review Audience Member Do yourself a favor and see these films. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/25/23 Full Review Audience Member This was a great set of not very short shorts. See it! Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 01/31/23 Full Review Audience Member I especially enjoyed Mondays at Racine, Inocente, and Open Heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/29/23 Full Review Audience Member Mini-reviews of the ones I saw. (A-) "Incident in New Baghdad" Great focus. Harrowing story. (A) "Saving Face" Inspiring in its quest for justice and heart-wrenching in its stories. Brilliant work. (A) "The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom"- Eye-opening, powerful look at recovery after a disaster. (A-) "The Barber of Birmingham: Foot Soldier of the Civil Rights Movement"- Intriguing tale of a dream realized. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Read all reviews
