In the Russia of Nicholas I, Prince Stephan Kasatsky (Ivan Mozhukhin) is an accomplished young man who idolizes the czar. Just before his marriage to the beautiful Countess Maria Korotkova (V. Dzheneyeva), she confesses that she has been the czar's mistress. His ideal of purity and honor shattered, Kasatsky abandons his wedding plans and post, and retreats to a monastery. Over the years he becomes a renowned holy man, Father Sergius -- but for all his good work, he remains tortured by doubt.
