Ottolenghi and the Cakes of Versailles may try to work in a few too many ingredients, but it's still a fun watch for fans of food documentaries.

Alexandra Heller-Nicholas ABC Radio (Australia) Shrewdly balances a careful juggling act between allowing us to celebrate the breathtaking edible artworks that the film documents, while simultaneously demanding we question the broader social, cultural and economic symbolism of such work Rated: 4/5 Dec 30, 2020 Full Review Sandra Hall Sydney Morning Herald The film is frustratingly light on the palace's history. Not until the bitter end does Gabbert try to inject a little social commentary into what has largely been a de luxe cooking show. Rated: 3/5 Dec 29, 2020 Full Review David Ehrlich indieWire A more nuanced documentary - one that didn't just feel like evidence of an event that happened at a museum, but a work of art unto itself - might have made a meal out of such ideas, rather than just offering them for dessert. Rated: C+ Sep 28, 2020 Full Review Selina Lee In Review Online A diverting but ultimately unsatisfying 75 minutes, simultaneously too short and too cluttered to meaningfully explore all the fascinating implications it presents. Jun 5, 2021 Full Review Sarah Ward Concrete Playground Glossy, gleaming eye candy for those with a sweet tooth. It never feels like a full meal, though. Feb 22, 2021 Full Review James Croot Stuff.co.nz Enlightening, erudite, but ultimately a little too ethereal. Rated: 3/5 Jan 5, 2021 Full Review Read all reviews

Audience Member A failed attempt at food porn that has seemingly never seen Masterchef. We live in a tv market saturated by food-porn of various flavours, genres and levels of drama. It's everywhere. If you're going to bring us something with such a grandiose title, then you'd better be bringing an A-game. And this isn't. I'm not sure what this thinks it's bringing to whom? It is quite scattershot in its approach. It never made my mouth water. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 02/23/23 Full Review Audience Member I watched this after waking up at 3:30 a.m. and was utterly entranced. Food and culture and art and when will they do this again. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 01/21/23 Full Review Audience Member It was fascinating. I saw a different side to Yotam, and learned more about his move into the food industry. Great views of the Met too. I would highly recommend this documentary. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/16/23 Full Review Read all reviews
