Tim Cogshell FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) The film is breathtaking and [Babetida Sadjo] in particular is breathtaking. Oct 3, 2023 Full Review Robert Abele Los Angeles Times A smart, chilling, and moody thriller set in a quaint French town, where the ghosts of an African immigrant’s traumatic past pay an unnerving, unwanted and consequential visit. Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Robert Daniels RogerEbert.com Foumbi’s “Our Father, The Devil” manages to take overused themes like trauma and grief and imbue them with every facet of their respective meaning. Rated: 3.5/4 Aug 25, 2023 Full Review Marya E. Gates Cool People Have Feelings, Too. (Substack) Babetida Sadjo gives a fierce and unforgettable performance. Feb 13, 2024 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Our Father, the Devil is a well-acted psychological drama that offers a fascinating portait of a woman's complicated feelings about revenge, religion, and redemption. The movie also explores issues regarding PTSD and long-term effects of childhood trauma. Nov 19, 2023 Full Review Wade Major FilmWeek (KPCC - NPR Los Angeles) One of the best feature directorial debuts I have seen in years, maybe even this century. Richard F To violent for my wife Rated 2 out of 5 stars 09/13/23 Full Review Big Mike A profoundly powerful and thoughtful movie. Entertaining and suspenseful. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/04/23 Full Review David H Terrific plot, timely and with twists all the way to the end. Great acting, not limited to Bebetida Sadjo and Soulemane Sy Savan. It's in French with English subtitles, but my limited knowledge of conversational French showed the nuances of key conversational points. And it cost 150K? Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/28/23 Full Review Fantastic Excellent acting and amazing screenplay Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 08/26/23 Full Review helder f A story of trauma, aggressors and victims. The story is interesting. One of the main premises of the script is suspense, but I think it doesn't work very well. There are no plot twists, just bits of information that add up as expected and that we need to wait for. And the wait is made of a few lifeless and repetitive scenes. I didn't exactly find it suspenseful but long-winded and a bit repetitive. I don't know if one loses that much if we skipped some of scenes. The end, perhaps the most powerful part of the movie, where a final piece of information is revealed, is good enough and perhaps makes it up for all the dragging out. Great performances. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 03/24/24 Full Review Eli B Our Father, the Devil writes itself into a corner on the occasion, but Ellie Foumbi manages to cross the finish line with positive results. Babetida Sadjo is the star of the movie, giving an immersive, heartbreaking performance with 2-3 moments that are jaw-dropping.
