      What to know

      Critics Consensus

It's decidedly uneven, but like Paul Rudd's performance in the title role, Our Idiot Brother is too charming to resist. Read critic reviews

      Movie Info

Easygoing, dimwitted slacker Ned Rochlin (Paul Rudd) makes the biggest mistake of his so-far uninspired life when he sells some pot to a cop. Homeless and jobless upon his release from jail, Ned must prevail upon his three sisters (Elizabeth Banks, Zooey Deschanel, Emily Mortimer) for help. Though Ned himself is utterly without a shred of ambition or guile, it's a different story with his sisters, who find their carefully ordered lives thrown into chaos whenever he's around.

A movie that meant well but just couldn't execute. Rudd is likeable and very good as the naïve brother who sees the good in everyone but his sisters played by Banks, Deshanel and Mortimer are one dimensionally written and performed. The plot is sappy and too contrived and the direction and script are muddled. However, Rudd continues to amaze me with his depth as an actor. 09-09-2013

The movie has a low key charm that works and there's definitely more complexity to these characters than the screenplay has been given credit for.

Our Idiot Brother takes a while to get going and never quite achieves the comic potential of its capable stars, but its harmless charm (and Paul Rudd's charismatic performance) make it the perfect film to zone out to for ninety minutes and feel a little bit happier by the time the credits roll.
