Sara Michelle Fetters MovieFreak.com While wolf attacks are typically metaphorical, sometimes they are all too literal. In Out Come the Wolves, that’s precisely the case Rated: 3/4 Sep 9, 2024 Full Review Clint Worthington RogerEbert.com The skimpy structure leaves little to feast on; it’s a bit too gamey for its own good. The wolf attacks and action scenes are very unrealistic in this substandard film. Sarfaraz A Adam MacDonald co-wrote and directed this Canadian thriller. Missy Peregrym plays the lead role. The plot revolves around three middle-aged friends: Sophie and her boyfriend, a writer named Nolan, and her closest friend Kyle, whom she considers a brother. However, Sophie's boyfriend, Nolan, continues to suspect Kyle's relations with Sophie. When Nolan and Kyle go deer hunting in the woods, they are surprised to be attacked by a pack of wolves, one of whom attacks Nolan, causing Kyle to run in panic before wondering to mercy-kill Nolan to relieve his misery. When he gets home, Sophia confronts him for abandoning Nolan, and she grabs her bow to go and save Nolan. The most of the film is spent developing the characters. Kyle feels Nolan is not made for Sophie, while Nolan believes Kyle is not Sophie's best friend and still has feelings for her. It is only after an hour that the movie delves into wolf action. Kyle and Sophie are first shown to be adept at target shooting, but when attacked with a pack of wolves, they appear to be better at tossing knives to defend themselves than shooting bows or rifles. Perhaps they are better at shooting non-predatory animals than predatory ones. Because of the dread of predatory creatures charging at you after seeing you or hearing your voice, as opposed to non-predatory animals fleeing for their life upon hearing human sounds. It's stylish movie with some vicious wolf attacks, but it doesn't salvage the film's one-hour opening, which is mostly chit-chat and practicing aiming. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/10/25 Full Review Craig B Out Come The Wolves had plenty of promise, but it was held back by poor dialogue and dodgy acting. It didn't help that the first 33 minutes was spent supposedly setting up the rest of the movie, but when the entire movie is 87 minutes, 33 minutes is way too much time. Even then, apart from providing some important background history between the 3 main characters, most of that time added little value to the story. Some pretty good and gory attack scenes. It seemed like a lost opportunity... and 87 minutes I will never get back. Not a movie I could recommend. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 12/17/24 Full Review Richard T This is terrible in every way from beginning to end. Poorly written nonsense script. If you know anything about motorcycles or hunting it is even more pathetic. AS usual the pro critics gave it a rating of 71%. They are useless. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review Chris B If you're a fan of Backcountry to you will most likely enjoy this. However, I found it clunky and predictable. It's also one of those where the characters are so unlikeable, the two males especially, I had no investment into whether they survived or not. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 12/02/24 Full Review CJ L After seeing Backcountry earlier this year and absolutely loving it, I was excited to jump into Out Come the Wolves to see if Mr. MacDonald had anything else up his sleeves with regards to wildlife horror and while I believe he did with regards to the violence and ferocity of the animals themselves, I found myself missing any spark for the main characters. Missy Peregrym's acting was outstanding and the relationship between her and her best friend was believable and realistic, but I found her relationship with her fiancee to be a bit of a struggle to get behind. I also found the unnecessary emotional tension between the two friends to be unnecessary given the already high stakes of the situation. Was it realistic? Sure. I suppose that in high stress environments it is natural for friends to become enemies as they attempt to whether the storm, but it made the film less enjoyable for me. Overall though, a solid film and one that I would recommend to a streaming audience. I'm not upset at all that this was my first movie viewing for December 2024 and will most likely visit it again during wildlife horror binges. That being said, I do feel that Backcountry is a superior film. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 12/01/24 Full Review Steven t Good movie but a touch predictable 3 person film.
