      Critics Consensus

Schizophrenic in subject and lackluster in execution, Outlander might have trouble finding the cult audience for which it was built.

pm h The movie was horrible it was so long and drawn out and so predictable. This writer must have an obsession with homosexuality because it was unbelievable how much time and space was dedicated to this in his writing. Overall it was just not at all entertaining or interesting. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/17/24 Full Review David W I absolutely loved both the concept and execution of this genre mash up on its release and having recently rewatched it I still do. The central and supporting performances are all excellent, there's a great script, very nice special effects, a fantastic musical score and it's all expertly directed. Caviezel in particular gives an excellent layered performance. I strongly disagree with the critics and it seems most reviewers on this one. It's got heart and atmosphere aplenty and is woefully underrated. Hopefully now that it's on a major streaming service it'll be reappraised, become a sleeper hit and garner the appreciative audience that it always deserved. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/22/24 Full Review Stuart E Ignore the critics. If you love good, quality monster movies, vikings, space sagas or movies about people and what makes them tick you will love this movie. Great performances from a great cast and some amazing special effects and set pieces. It's hard not to feel some sympathy for the monster, which is the key to most great monster movies, and there is a degree of 'who are the real monsters' and it is a close run thing in some ways. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Nick W An underrated gem that blends Sci-fi and Fantasy in a medieval Norse setting with vikings, aliens, dragons, and futuristic tech. Musical score is excellent as well. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/03/24 Full Review M F I wached this movie close to when it first came out and since watched a few more times. Its one of a handful movies I can watch repeatedly and like it. Whats not to like about it? It has Vikings and one of the most wicked monsters out there. Satisfies scifi, action and a little horror. Its a good watch dont let these lame reviews tell you otherwise. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/25/23 Full Review leroy S Alienavatarthelastkingdom con bicho cutre digital. Hank Sartin Time Out Rated: 2/5 Nov 18, 2011 Full Review Kim Newman Empire Magazine A film version of fish and chips - humble, honest fare that's ludicrous, inventive, gory within limits, and has a cast having so much fun it's hard not to be swept along with them. And besides, you can't have nouvelle cuisine every night of the week. Rated: 3/5 Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Dominic Wells Times (UK) Sadly, the kooky premise of Outlander solidifies quickly into formula: monster is fought, fair maiden won, kingship gained and past errors redeemed with no real surprises along the way. Rated: 2/5 Apr 24, 2009 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Underneath its B-movie appearances are notable actors engaged in an exceptionally strange mishmash of genres that somehow elevates itself beyond its limitations. Rated: 3/4 Sep 5, 2023 Full Review Mike Massie Gone With The Twins Far too much screentime is wasted on boisterous merrymaking and mead-guzzling. Rated: 1/10 Nov 29, 2020 Full Review Jason Best Movie Talk Outlander is itself a genre-blending mash-up, a far-out fusion of ancient Viking saga and sci-fi adventure: Beowulf meets Alien.
