I'm not sure whether to feel bad for or be critical of Bhansali. But here's the thing (hello Karni Sena, I am talking to you): your disappointment and disapproval of a film can coexist with the film itself.

Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat is a grand historical epic that unfolds like a moving painting rich in color, scale, and symbolism. Deepika Padukone embodies Rani Padmavati with regal poise and quiet strength. Her performance is restrained yet commanding, making dignity and moral conviction her most powerful weapons. Shahid Kapoor lends nobility to Ratan Singh, while Ranveer Singh’s Alauddin Khilji dominates the screen with feral intensity, delivering a chilling portrait. Visually, Padmaavat is breathtaking. Bhansali’s meticulous design, sweeping cinematography, and thunderous background score elevate nearly every scene into operatic spectacle. Character arcs can feel static, and the storytelling leans more on symbolism than emotional complexity. Padmaavat is a visually magnificent, emotionally controlled epic that thrives on scale and symbolism. Deepika Padukone’s dignified performance and Bhansali’s stunning craftsmanship make it an unforgettable cinematic experience.

I was transported back to the 13th century. The soundtrack was fantastic. As an anglo saxon I didn't know enough about the era to be angry, but I understand the movie caused great anger in Pakistan.
