S. R. Praveen The Hindu Painkili is filled with lazily written characters with abrupt arcs and dead-end situations that do not evoke any excitement or anticipation. Feb 14, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

arvind s I had massive expectations from Painkili, given it is produced by Fahadh and written by Jithu Madhavan and it stars Sajin Gopu and Anaswara among others. I am not sure what exactly went wrong but it did not work for me. Suku owns a small printing press in his town. While he is out of town, he gets into an altercation when his bike is stolen. In a bid to escape the law, he gets certified as clinically insane. Meanwhile, Sheeba attempts to run away from home but gets caught every time. When Suku & Sheeba's paths cross, Suku falls for Sheeba. The issue with Painkili is that it is a very confused film. It does not know what it wants to be. It tries very hard at being quirky but it doesn't get there. Sajin Gopu is good in what is probably his first lead role. He puts his heart and soul into this. Anaswara is stellar in non-comic roles, but struggles with comedy yet again. Chandu Salimkumar's comic turn is reminiscent of his father in many ways. Roshan Shanavas, Abu Salim, Riyaz Khan, Jisma Vinal, Lijo Jose Pellissery co-star. Painkili could have been one of the greatest of the year given the people involved in this project. It is experimental, an ode to films of yore but it is also an experiment that has gone out of hand - a misfire that will go down as one of the biggest disappointments of the year for me.
