john k Neo Noir is my favorite genre and it seems the late 80s and early 90s was rife with well written and directed low budget outings. John Dahl's works first come to mind, Kill Me Again, The Last Seduction and Red Rock West among the finest examples in the best tradition of NN, with great femme fatales leading their slightly dim witted male to his demise or barely escaping with his life. Then there are derivative NO BUDGET offerings like Palmdale that have the blueprint but not the skill. Not to say it does not have its charms. It starts out by our ex GI special services lowlife boarding the LA Metro in what looks like Palmdale CA, then later that night getting off at Van Nuys Station from the Surfliner, so much for continuity, LOL! His purpose is to accept a job from a couple of nerdy hackers to off a competitor located at a downtown bar in LA, which they tell him he will have to take the bus to get to (I would have offed these two skid marks right then and there)! At this point the plot meanders to a damsel in distress (femme fatale?) before finally achieving his mission, sort of. Most of the fun with NN is the ride to the climax and to its credit, Palmdale tries to give the viewer a few twist and turns before devolving into a sort of happy ending, rare for the genre. All in all, I have had far worse hour and fifteen minutes with big budget movies, hence 2.5 stars, just don't expect the next John Dahl magnum opus.
