Teresa H Compelling story, good sound track and effective interweaving of real and imaginary worlds and characters. Story and visuals both very dark - the dark picture was welcome during several episodes of violence. The adults don't have much backstory, but since we are seeing most of this through the eyes of a child, that is appropriate. It was interesting that, although I don't really speak Spanish, by the end scenes I had stopped noticing the subtitles and was hearing the English in my mind as though it was spoken. Can't remember that ever happening before. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/25 Full Review Joseph D Absolute EPIC in every way. An adult fairytale that sweeps you away into another realm. Just an amazing film. So happy to see this again on the BIG screen!! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/18/25 Full Review Miguel Marquez I love this movie since the first time I watched it. It has a special place in my memory and in my heart. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/14/24 Full Review Len great storytelling and imagination. memorable movie and chilling creatures. finally saw it in theaters. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 09/20/22 Full Review BadNews R Pan’s Labyrinth is one of those films I had always been aware of visually—I recognized the iconic images of the Faun, the creepy fairies, and of course the Pale Man—but I had never truly understood who these characters were or the story behind them until finally watching the movie. The film follows a young girl, Ofelia, who is revealed to be Princess Moanna, heir to the King of the Underworld. Set against the backdrop of World War II in Francoist Spain (yes, even Dwight Eisenhower gets a mention for historical context), the story intertwines grim wartime reality with dark, fantastical trials. Ofelia is tasked with completing a series of challenges to prove her royal lineage, guided—or manipulated—by the Faun, a figure who constantly leaves you wondering whether he’s a benevolent guide or a sinister trickster. The stakes eventually rise to the horrific possibility of sacrificing her newborn brother, and that tension pushes the film into deeply unsettling territory. What struck me most is how deceptive this movie can be in appearance. At first glance, you might expect a fairy tale for children—but this is far from a kids’ movie. It’s brutal, bloody, and unflinching, with executions, violence, and death woven into its storytelling. Even the fantasy creatures, though beautifully designed, are haunting and horrific rather than whimsical. Guillermo del Toro’s world is rich and mesmerizing, but it’s also one of despair and darkness. That being said, the artistry is undeniable. The cinematography is stunning, the creature design is unforgettable, and the blending of fantasy and harsh reality is executed with precision. The performances, especially by Ivana Baquero (Ofelia) and Sergi López (as the chilling Captain Vidal), are outstanding. The writing and direction are meticulous—everything feels deliberate, layered, and crafted to stick with you long after it ends. Personally, while I admire the film, it isn’t one I would revisit. It’s too dark and unsettling for my taste, and not the kind of story I’d enjoy experiencing again. But I can absolutely see why Pan’s Labyrinth is regarded as a masterpiece. It’s a film that will continue to stand the test of time, so long as viewers can embrace the Spanish-language dialogue and the heaviness of its subject matter. Final Verdict: A hauntingly beautiful dark fantasy that blends fairy tale wonder with wartime horror. It’s not for everyone, and it’s not for me to rewatch—but it’s impossible not to respect the craftsmanship, creativity, and lasting cultural impact. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/17/25 Full Review Savage C **SPOILER ALERT** scary eyeballs-in-palms monster. There. That’s all I have to say. Haunting movie, incredibly dark. If you are looking for a fun, feel good movie that the entire family can enjoy, you do not pick this one! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 09/13/25 Full Review Read all reviews
