Morgan Wilcock Film Comment Magazine A poignant documentary about the legacy of a traumatic past as experienced across four generations. Feb 14, 2014 Full Review Jeannette Catsoulis New York Times A sparking, gossipy soap opera that's riddled with emotion and stuffed with strong characters. Jan 23, 2014 Full Review Daphne Howland Village Voice Solnicki's spliced-together, back-and-forth approach at first seems a jumble, but of course his choices are deliberate, and they pile up into revealing art. Jan 21, 2014 Full Review Jay Kuehner Cinema Scope Papirosen transcends the home-movie genre by being ordinary; this is a look into the abyss that never strays from the surface of its chosen milieu. Oct 10, 2017 Full Review Ethan Alter Film Journal International This distillation of 200 hours' worth of home movies probably means a lot for the family at its center, but less for those of us in the audience. Jan 23, 2014 Full Review Amber Wilkinson Eye for Film Although never less than immersive, the documentary suffers from Solnicki's freeform approach, which has a tendency to lack context. Audience Member What could have and should have been a beautiful family story was list due to confusion. It might have helped to have a handout of the family tree so the audience didn't spend 30+ minutes trying to figure out who's who in the family. And there was confusion on who was narrating and who was the camera person, which in turn was who the narrator was speaking to. Too much confusion.
