      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

Minor but engaging Audiard, Paris, 13th District explores millennial love through a visually compelling lens that's partly undercut by its episodic narrative structure.

Sydney Very shallow, definitely don’t recommend it. Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/27/22 Full Review David A Imaginative development of characters, very French. A film that explores modern love with insight, humour and pathos. Acclaimed director Jacques Audiard makes films with power and emotional resonance and even though this film could be considered having a lighter touch it still stikes a blow in many ways. Shot in stark Black and White this fine film is the story of three Paris millenials and how their lives become intertwined. There is Emilie, a bored call centre operator, who places an ad for a flatmate. Camille, a teacher, answers her and they soon form a relationship. Nora attends the same university that Camille teaches at. She is an older student and is trying to reshape her life. She eventually meets Camille and they also form a relationship. This film does really well in exploring relationships and love and the modern dating society. It's all handled with care and tenderness and warm humour. Performances are exceIlent, especially Noemie Merlant and Makita Samba. I really enjoyed this film and how it didn't lean into cliches at all. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review matthew r All though a bit bumpy at the start, Paris 13th District smooths out any issues and comes home in style. Edgy and sleek, the plot is engaging, the cast is top notch and the directing does the job. Naomie Merlant is on a roll since the Lady on Fire and is becoming an engaging and versatile actress. Sophomore Makita Samba plays the male lead and does so with a character loaded with style and aplomb. Newcomer Lucie Zhang also does well although some may find her character a bit overdone. Scout Tafoya RogerEbert.com Audiard’s not been this sharp and electric in a decade at least, understandably energized by his incredible cast and by the intensity of the sexual dynamics explored within. Dec 23, 2022 Full Review David Sims The Atlantic The result is sloppy but funny, and includes a charming debut performance by Lucie Zhang as a mixed-up call-center employee. Aug 3, 2022 Full Review A.A. Dowd Digital Trends ...a love triangle more banal than stirring, and a sex-life mosaic more melodramatic than the tales Tomine told across a series of panels. Apr 28, 2022 Full Review Kent M. Wilhelm Tilt Magazine Audiard manages to take the disconnected urban lifestyle of young adults and present a more faithful rendition than we’ve come to expect. He reminds us that sex is not just sexy but also an effective cinematic tool. Jul 21, 2023 Full Review Marshall Shaffer Decider A vision of the City of Light that feels different enough to warrant our attention. These interwoven stories carry wider resonance that extends well beyond a Francophone audience, too, with their stark sexual attitudes and poignant romantic heartbeat. Jan 20, 2023 Full Review Yasser Medina Cinefilia It interrogates, with a certain episodic coarseness, the dilemmas of love in the digital age of gender identity and intercultural diversity, but in general its overall vision loses its dramatic potential.
