What to Know

Critics Consensus

Equal parts sumptuous and vapid, Parthenope gains some radiance thanks to Celeste Dalla Porta's arresting performance but frustratingly finds writer-director Paolo Sorrentino out of his depth.

Peter Howell Toronto Star Parthenope, Paolo Sorrentino’s latest cinema exuberance, flutters like its recurring motif of a silk scarf caught in a Mediterranean breeze -- tantalizing, yet just out of reach. Rated: 2.5/4 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Anne T. Donahue Globe and Mail A two-dimensional examination of gender, tethered to a protagonist with no real depth. Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Bill Goodykoontz Arizona Republic The longer the movie goes on, the older Parthenope gets. The older she gets, the weirder the story gets. And the weirder the story gets, the more I liked it. Rated: 3/5 Feb 18, 2025 Full Review Jeff Mitchell Phoenix Film Festival ‘Parthenope’ is a gorgeously filmed picture, but the narrative’s beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Rated: 2/4 Feb 22, 2025 Full Review Carla Hay Culture Mix Much like the movie's title character, Parthenope is pretty to look at but has a hollow personality. This Italian drama pretends to be erotic and provocative, but it is neither. Viewers might be as bored or frustrated as the movie's shallow characters. Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Anne Brodie What She Said Marred by an insipid script and lead, Parthenope, a new twist on the mythical Greek figure, falls flat. Meant to be an erotic tale of irresistible woman whose vacant eyes, and easy sexuality are straight from the pre feminist past. Rated: 1/4 Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Read all reviews

Robert D Really disliked the movie! No direction! One of those movies where it seemed the director felt no obligation to the audience! Just throw a bunch of scenes up that he felt that he might enjoy filming for his own entertainment! Or to annoy people that took precious time and money to sit through it! I love Italy and Italians but this a pretty sad depiction of them! Rated 1 out of 5 stars 02/22/25 Full Review jennifer s It kept trying to be a good movie but just could not muster up the strength to do so. It felt like a failed attempt by some average American trying to make a European indie film by inserting disjointed random scenes and hoping that something would stick. I wanted to like it but I could not. I tried, I hoped, but it was sloppy. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Claire no plot...disjointed movie....aside from the scenery...boring. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 02/17/25 Full Review Antonio G A dream of a movie. Shot entirely in heaven! With a prospective of hell… Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/14/25 Full Review Stephen An elegantly and exquisitely created film on every point. If you love film, see it. Beautifully done. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 02/13/25 Full Review Remy Parthen-NOPE for me. Didn't have a overall message. Didn't think the character was clever with her responses.
