When Joseph Verrett (Andre Braugher), a Jesuit priest who teaches history at a black high school, is offered the position of basketball coach, he resists at first because he believes the school glorifies sports over education. Eventually, though, Joseph accepts and sets up a game with the unbeaten team from the white Jesuit high school. Father Grant (Rip Torn), the pastor of the parish, cautions against such a divisive move, but Joseph disagrees and prepares his team for the game.
