Critics Consensus

Patriot Games doesn't win many points for verisimilitude, but some entertaining set pieces -- and Harrison Ford in the central role -- more than compensate for its flaws.

Wendy Ide The Times (UK) There are some issues with the film — it dumbed down Clancy’s book to such an extent that the author distanced himself from the production — but Ford is terrific. Feb 1, 2024 Full Review Kathleen Carroll New York Daily News Patriot Games crackles with tension. Rated: 3/4 Jun 6, 2023 Full Review Jack Mathews Newsday There's not an ounce of plausibility to be found anywhere in the plot, or among its cast of characters, but it does have its moments. Australian director Phillip Noyce is a wild man with action scenes, and Ford remains [appealing]. Zom L Patriot Games is a tense, engaging political thriller that successfully blends action, espionage, and family drama into a tightly-woven narrative. Directed by Phillip Noyce and adapted from Tom Clancy’s bestselling novel, the film brings back Jack Ryan (played by Harrison Ford) in a story that feels both personal and global. The plot follows Ryan after he thwarts a terrorist attack in London, unintentionally earning the wrath of an Irish terrorist faction. What makes this film stand out is how it doesn’t just focus on the geopolitical stakes, but also the deeply personal ones—Ryan’s family becomes a target, giving the film an emotional weight that elevates it above many action thrillers of its era. Harrison Ford is the film’s anchor, delivering a grounded, believable performance that perfectly balances the everyman and the reluctant hero. Sean Bean’s performance as the vengeful antagonist Sean Miller is chilling and charismatic, making for one of the more memorable Clancy villains on screen. The supporting cast, including Anne Archer and James Earl Jones, adds depth and credibility. The action sequences—particularly the ambushes and final confrontation—are well-staged, intense, and realistic, avoiding over-the-top spectacle in favor of suspense and tension. James Horner’s score heightens the drama, giving the film a pulse that matches its blend of intellect and emotion. That said, Patriot Games does have its pacing dips, with certain exposition-heavy moments slowing things down, and it occasionally simplifies complex political issues for the sake of accessibility. Still, these flaws don’t detract much from the overall experience. In the end, Patriot Games is a very good film—thoughtful, suspenseful, and carried by Ford’s steady presence. It’s not quite flawless, but it’s a smart and thrilling entry in the Jack Ryan franchise that stands the test of time. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 09/16/25 Full Review Alejandro E Based on a then-popular book by Tom Clancy. The plot may be a little biased, but putting that aside, the combination of action and suspense is functional enough to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon. Or any day, for that matter. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/16/25 Full Review Raymond C I find Patriot Games to be the best of the Jack Ryan franchise. Sean Bean delivers a great performance as the main antagonist and I personally prefer the small-scale revenge storyline as opposed to the global espionage or nuclear bomb focused plots in the future films. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 08/07/25 Full Review Purple G They did Anne Archer dirty. Offensive patriarchal drool. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 05/25/25 Full Review Audience Member I liked this movie after I rewatched it and it’s more of an action thriller than I remember! Sean Bean and Harrison Ford act really well in the movie and you can really feel the fear and intensity throughout it. It is a bit old-fashioned in quite a few ways, however I can see myself really liking this movie if I saw it in theaters back in the early 1990s. The IRA is a fascinating group to study in history as well, being considered terrorists by many but also freedom fighters with a somewhat relatable cause. Nevertheless, here it is personal and all about the revenge which made me invested! Harrison Ford is truly in everything good! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 04/28/25 Full Review Jerod S Clancy's novel on the big screen with Harrison Ford...the story and film hold up well after so many years.
