A single suburban father works at a mall as a security guard to make ends meet. He takes his job very seriously, even though most of his colleagues and customers don't. As the holidays approach, Paul gets his moment to shine when Santa's little helpers shut down the mall down and take hostages, including his daughter and girlfriend. He realizes no one knows the place better than he does and he mounts his trusty steed, a Segway, and goes to the rescue.

Critics Consensus

Paul Blart: Mall Cop has some laughs, but its plot is flimsy and lacking in any sustained comic momentum.

David Jenkins Time Out Unmemorable, unfunny and unoriginal. Jillian M Classic, must see. Not sure why the top rated critics are hating. Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 11/25/25 Full Review Alison E Relies heavily on fat jokes to the point it was almost uncomfortable. Outside of his self deprecating humor there wasn’t much else Kevin James had to offer for this film. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Danny W. Fat Hard: Fat Harder. Fat rip off of Die Hard. Kevin James is a master at falling constantly and acting like he’s one step away from ending it all. Horrible, and not even in a “it’s so bad it’s funny” way, just in a “has my life come to this? Watching Fat Blart do fat things, a 70 year old looking teenage daughter, and a team of X-treme athletes try and rob a mall. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 11/22/25 Full Review Virgo V Paul Blart: Mall Cop is a 2009 American action comedy film. The film was directed by Steve Carr, written by Kevin James and Nick Bakay and produced by Adam Sandler, Jack Giarraputo, Kevin James, Todd Garner and Barry Bernardi. It stars Kevin James, Jayma Mays, Keir O’Donnell, Bobby Cannavale, Stephen Rannazzisi, Raini Rodriguez and Shirley Knight. It was produced by Columbia Pictures, Happy Madison Productions and Relativity Media. It was distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing. The film grossed $183.3 million worldwide against a production budget of $26 million, but was not well received by critics. James' performance was praised generally by critics, however. Vision wrote: "it was like an episode of King of Queens, except longer. The film tells the story of Blart, a single dad and a bumbling mall security guard, who finds himself in the middle of a heist and the only one man enough to rescue hostages. The main actress kind of even looked like Carrie. Kevin James at his finest and I’m not exaggerating. Overall, the film was flimsy and juvenile all over but did sustain comical momentum up until the end. I admire the mall amenities such as Champs and the Rainforest Café. Fun addition to the production. Best part of the film was when Paul Blart misses the jump-off from the van to the escape vehicle but nothing tops the ending birthday card. "Amy, you are like a great meal. You make me feel stuffed… with feelings!! Plus, I don’t need to unbutton my pants." Three fries for the performances, the production and the story." Rated 3 out of 5 stars 11/18/25 Full Review Logan G. Paul Blart: Mall Cop is an incredibly stupid, but often funny good time. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 11/16/25 Full Review Ben P Funny movie! Definitely better than the critics say it is. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 11/12/25 Full Review Read all reviews
