Luke Buckmaster Guardian The cast do their best with the material but the scattered structure of the film does them no favours. May 3, 2016 Full Review Jake Wilson The Age (Australia) Not all the subplots arrive at satisfactory conclusions but, scene by scene, Pawno is an attractively modest, engaging work. Rated: 2.5/5 Apr 21, 2016 Full Review David Stratton The Australian An outstanding example of contemporary independent Australian cinema. Rated: 4/5 Apr 18, 2016 Full Review Tim Coleman Total Film Captivates with compassionate vignettes of humanity. Rated: 4/5 Oct 23, 2017 Full Review Nick Dent Time Out Sydney As a portrait of contemporary Australia, it's an antidote to just about everything else out there. Rated: 3/5 Sep 27, 2017 Full Review Jennie Kermode Eye for Film Although it gets too sentimental in places, especially towards the end, this is an entertaining, bold little film with a clear voice of its own. Russell B Well composed movie with many characters entwined into a basic storyline, there are a few laughs. I would have liked a better ending, but to be fair it was pretty much a day full of events... Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/23/25 Full Review bob c Junk. I have to write more for posting. Junk Rated 1 out of 5 stars 05/05/25 Full Review James K Fantastic snapshot of what life is like in the Australian streets dealing with addiction, pawn shops, the portrayal was spot on in regards to the dynamics of the day to day life in an aussie pawn shop, the sub plot of Danny was heart warming, I think thus quiet film is fantastic and very well acted, I'd recommend it for sure Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/30/25 Full Review Peter B There is a bit of Shakespeare in this one though no fantasy at all and a bit too close to the bone for many. What were those marks on her arms? Rated 4 out of 5 stars 04/11/25 Full Review Reviews For You A Written by one of the starring actors I felt this was like a stage play taken to the movies. Set around two main cast, the Pawn Shop owner and his sidekick. They intertwine with the locals who frequent the store or hangout in the street nearby. Aggression and sweetness sit side by side as do kindness of heart and brutal violence. Multiple facets bind several characters together in humour and fists. The uplifting surprise at the end shows us life still goes on for some but not all. A dark look at Melbourne’s Footscray region with a little light added for good measure. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/30/25 Full Review Audience Member Different, entertaining, deceptively fast moving story line, some great acting, good character portrayals, teaches about tolerance and lives of others.
