Victor O A moment of inspiration has led me to look into Sarah Carter’s filmography, and this movie caught my attention. Along with Sarah Carter, this contained a decent cast and I was more than interested to watch. A doting mother of a brilliant girl named Pearl, is brutally murdered by her boyfriend for being an uncontrollable philanderer. With only a drunken grandmother, it would appear Pearl’s spoiled existence comes to an end, but it becomes even more troubling when it appears that her mother has willed that she be raised by her biological father, a man she met decades ago in Paris after a divorce. This man is a film director whose life is a rut, having lost all respectability as he drinks himself to the point of suicide every day. Raising this girl whom he has never met becomes troubling for him as she is still traumatized by her experience and acts out terribly every single day, she lives with him as she slowly and steadily gets used to the man. I was hoping for a good drama, but instead I got a terrible one. This movie has a cast of great performers, all of them playing these morally bankrupt people attempting to deal with life and all its disappointments. This was a terrible story, with nobody to get behind, with an ending that felt tacked on and disappointing. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 07/06/25 Full Review tom m Just okay. The performance by the actress in the title role was a bit flat. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member In this the Age of the Blockbuster, the family drama with relatable characters in a recognizable situation is almost an endangered species. "Pearl" shows us that a well-told, well-acted human story is still alive and well when in the hands of the right director, writer and cast. This is indeed a family drama, but very much of the twenty-first century: Pearl and her dad have never met until she shows up on his doorstep, grandma is better at hitting the gin bottle than dealing with a feisty fifteen-year-old, and Mom, well let's just say she's no longer in the picture (you'll have to see the film to find out why). Bobby Roth directs an excellent ensemble cast in his own script. Anthony LaPaglia couldn't be better as the on-the-skids father reluctantly facing up to his responsibilities, and Larsen Thompson (definitely an actress to watch!) as Pearl, is more than up to the task of getting him in touch with his father-feeling. Their rocky relationship is at the heart of a story which challenges us to define what constitutes family in our own fragmented times.
