What to Know

Critics Consensus

Pet Sematary: Bloodlines takes half-hearted stabs at expanding the world of Stephen King's original story, but they're largely lost in a substandard story that mistakes bland gore for effective horror.

Brian Lowry CNN.com A crisp and efficient reminder of King’s line “Sometimes, dead is better,” and that occasionally, sometimes prequels are too. In other words, Pet Sematary: Bloodlines is much better than it has any right to be. Tim M Sometimes dead is better; Pet Sematary: Bloodlines resurrects a tired franchise but only manages to bury it further into the ground. Rated 1 out of 5 stars 10/27/24 Full Review Blu B 20 years ago this would've gone straight to video for release. Worst of the franchise no even a question, and that's saying a lot because Pet Semetary II is terrible. Congrats though, you've hit a new bottom for the series that's stood for 30 years! The editing, cinematography, and pacing are all horrifically bad here. It's so dark you can barely see half the time, scenes don't make sense, the direction isn't good, it's dull and lifeless in the shots you can see after the opening few minutes. You'd think this would be a cool idea to focus on the origins of the semetary and all from a different era but they completely botch it. This straight doesn't make sense and gets so boring and convuluted that by halfway I genuinely could'nt tell you what was happening. I could care less and even when I did try to follow it, I could barely see it. The acting is terrible mainly because of the stock characters and the terrible dialouge. Something about the Vietnam War, and jumping between different characters with unrelated plots and terrible music to boot. Stay away from this. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 10/10/24 Full Review Mark W This was better than I was anticipating, but that’s not saying much. It’s a prequel to the 2019 adaptation and goes some way to exploring the origins of the Pet Sematary. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 09/19/24 Full Review Karen M This couldn't be much worse. Without a backstory it's a disjointed mess. With a "backstory" it's worse, seemingly replacing every element of the mythos King created with some unidentifiable story which doesn't fit. Zombies who murder and infect and multiply? Crandall bloodlines going back centuries in a web of supernatural brotherhood? Save yourself!!! Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 08/10/24 Full Review Korra N This prequel to 2019's Pet Sematary is one of the most unnecessary films ever made. A prequel could've worked, had they bothered to focus on real likable characters instead of cardboard cutouts, unnerving tension instead of cheap scares, and a plot that not only makes sense in the grand scheme of Stephen King's world, but has impact. Bloodlines does nothing great or worthwhile, save for brief shining moments with David Duchovny's Bill, but his performance doesn't save this film. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 08/08/24 Full Review stephen b When did this even come out? Was it straight to TV? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 07/15/24 Full Review Read all reviews
