David Stratton The Australian The film takes a somewhat satirical approach towards film school processes and the central performance is very attractive. After the very enigmatic conclusion the viewer is left with a great deal on which to ponder. Rated: 4/5 Jun 16, 2023 Full Review Stephen A. Russell Time Out Petrol reminds us that Lodkina is clearly a talented filmmaker to watch, with big ideas and plenty more left in the tank Aug 16, 2022 Full Review Luke Buckmaster Guardian It commands a certain kind of respect, but doesn’t give a lot back. Rated: 3/5 Aug 15, 2022 Full Review Simon Miraudo Movie Squad (RTRFM 92.1) An absolutely beguiling and emotionally involving mystery with a brilliant sonic texture. I loved being invited into its unnerving spaces. Rated: 4/5 May 26, 2023 Full Review Jason Di Rosso ABC News (Australia) [Petrol] has a poetic and sometimes surreal narrative style that conveys a vividly emotional take on the world; it reveals profound truths about the characters, even if the precise detail of their story remains slightly -- and deliciously -- cryptic. May 23, 2023 Full Review Daniel Gorman In Review Online Ostensibly a coming-of-age tale about an introverted young woman searching for the unknown... Lodkina’s penchant for upending narrative conventions and gleeful indulgence in all manner of the fantastique makes for a uniquely invigorating experience. Apr 8, 2023 Full Review Read all reviews

Nicholas B A bit like an Australian version of Mulholland Drive. I knew nothing about this film, and thought I knew where it was going. I was more than pleasantly surprised to discover how wrong I was. This is a film made with confidence and conviction. It's gentle, textured and nuanced in a way that slowly envelopes. It's also brave enough to tell a very familiar story in a very different way. Well paced and deeply satisfying, although some may feel differently about it's cryptic ending.
