Alec B I suppose having Dreyfus be driven to such madness by Clouseau that he becomes a Bond level villain was the next logical step for a series that had already gone full cartoon. Sellers' exhaustion with this character was more obvious here but there are still enough enjoyable gags (i.e. the nose melting scene) that keep it watchable. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/10/24 Full Review Marc Z This movie trades off of a few things: a love of Peter Sellers as Inspector Clouseau, the gifts of Herbert Mom as the torturted ex-police Commissioner, and an appreciation of comedy. The franchise continues To devolve into cheaper and more childish humor as the series progresses, and away from the true linguistic genius of the original two installments. However, it is still enjoyable. Sellers is still hilarious, as is Mom and the supporting cast. The film's plot deviates from anything to do with the "Pink Panther" moniker. AT this point the Pink Panther and Clouseau are somewhat interchangeable. The interplay between Kwok and Sellers is somewhat forced, but loved by viewers and heightened in each installment. This still holds up. It is the 5th Installment and 4th best in the franchise. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 05/10/23 Full Review isla s If you've seen any of the other Pink Panther films featuring Peter Sellers, then you'll have a good idea of roughly what to expect. I suppose its somewhat like a pre-Jackie Chan, James Bond parody with extra good doses of slapstick comedy. In a way it looks dated but most of the said slapstick comedy isn't exactly ruined because its a few decades old (it dates from 1976) and I was quite amused and entertained by it. Clouseau is still very much the bumbling bufoon type, with (but of course!) the most grating French accent (or should that be, ackk-zant?!), which made me think of the English policeman character from 'Allo 'Allo, who I imagine was copying the character of Clouseau. All in all it was a funny and entertaining watch that I'd happily recommend. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 03/31/23 Full Review Audience Member Herbert Lom does awesome in this movie as a comedic yet sinister villain, and the scenes with Peter Sellers are pure gold. Brilliantly entertaining and funny with genius sequences that still hold up for me! Clumsy but clever by accident as always! Rated 4 out of 5 stars 02/05/23 Full Review Audience Member In "A Shot In The Dark" and "Return Of The Pink Panther", both ended with Clouseau having driven his boss Dreyfus insane with his ineptitude. This time, Dreyfus had undergone mental treatment and has supposedly been cured-but when Clouseau comes back, it's back to square one. Except this time Dreyfus escapes from custody-and HE becomes the villain Clouseau has to find and deal with! Hiring some henchmen, he kidnaps a scientist and forces him to build a doomsday machine with far-reaching destructive powers, a la a James Bond villain. His demand-Clouseau must die, or he will rain destruction upon any part of the world he chooses. This is better than the prior movie, at least in terms of story. Then- US President Gerald Ford is shown stumbling like Clouseau (he had such a reputation then), Clouseau manages to cause other people misery with his stumbling, but he does use genuine detective work to find his way to the castle where Dreyfus has his lair. It could have been better-for instance the scene where Clouseau is at Oktoberfest in West Germany and all sorts of assassins try and fail to kill him falls flat. Also there are irrelevant scenes of "stumbling for a laugh", though not as many as in the prior movie. The best of the 1970's series movies, but the original two are far superior. Pauline Kael New Yorker There are funny things in The Pink Panther Strikes Again, but after a while I was gripping the arms of my chair to stay awake. Jan 22, 2024 Full Review Roger Ebert Chicago Sun-Times If I'm less than totally enthusiastic about The Pink Panther Strikes Again, maybe it was because I've been over this ground with Clouseau many times before.
