Critics Consensus

POTC: AWE provides the thrilling action scenes, but mixes in too many characters with too many incomprehensible plot threads.

What began as a thrilling and engrossing entertainer ends up as a terribly tedious franchisee -- the convoluted plot leaves you more confused than involved. Go to Full Review

Buoyed by luck, comedy and state-of-the-art special effects, it has not only survived the journey intact, it's also washed down its decks, ready for a whole new cycle of movies to begin. Go to Full Review

An epic finale, this overlong, overstuffed film manages to neatly resolve all the loose ends from the previous entry, even if it takes considerable time to do so. Go to Full Review

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End is marginally more coherent than last year's sequel-a very small mercy. It is, however, just as bloated, requiring a level of familiarity with both its predecessors. Go to Full Review

At World's End is nearly three hours long, so it does feel a little padded, but for the most part the film moves at a reasonable pace - even if it almost stumbles to the finish while trying to tie up all the loose ends. Go to Full Review

Tyler S @tylerking24 13h An alright ending to the main storyline. I just think they tried to do too much in three movies. I feel like if you wanted to make this storyline better, shorten the movies, and give it one more film. Instead, we have four films slightly over two hours. Plus I'll be honest, I do not care for the storyline of the redcoats. They are so lame. See more Zema K Nov 19 At World’s End is a visually stunning but overstuffed finale. Jack Sparrow’s rescue from Davy Jones’ Locker leads to an epic clash of pirate lords against Lord Beckett, packed with surreal imagery and massive battles. While the spectacle impresses, the plot is tangled and the runtime drags, leaving it both thrilling and exhausting. See more Garrett B @garrettbowman Nov 17 There were some pretty memorable moments, but it felt gross as a christian. Many people dying etc. I liked it but not something I will watch again probably, unless i watch whole series. See more Jake D. @Pippen Nov 4 They really tried too hard to be “cool” here. They made up plots, just to drop them a minute later for new ones. But, the climax gave me chills. Three stars. See more Christopher L Oct 21 I was thinking about this series again recently, I recall the days when these films were huge and highly anticipated! Ah, a more innocent time. This movie is highly overcooked and way too long, like most of the others in this series. It also takes itself a little too seriously at times and meanders into too many story threads before trying to be an epic Lord of the Pirates sort of thing. It does find an interesting way to wrap up all the character arcs but takes too long to get there. Worth a watch for many of the action set pieces and fun to see Captain Barbosa again, who I actually feel is a little more interesting than Sparrow, whose bit was played out after the first film. The second film in this trilogy remains the best, albeit it has many of the same problems. See more Lennox B Oct 9 A long movie yes but it closes out everybody's character arc amazingly. Wouldn't have done anything different one of if not the best movie trilogy ever outside of star wars and Indiana jones See more Read all reviews
