94% 51 Reviews Tomatometer 82% Fewer than 50 Ratings Audience Score In a near dystopian future, Japan's government launches PLAN 75, a program encouraging the elderly to terminate their own lives to relieve its rapidly aging population's social and economic burdens. In Chie Hayakawa's remarkable and sensitive feature film debut, the lives of three ordinary citizens intersect in this new reality as they confront the crushing callousness of a world ready to dispose of those no longer deemed valuable. Legendary Japanese actress Chieko Baishō stars as a 78-year-old Michi who considers signing up for the program after losing her meager but fulfilling hotel job and the means to live independently. A young Plan 75 salesman Himoru (Hayato Isomura) initially believes in the program's benefits and serves as the human face of the program. And Maria (Stephanie Arianne), a Filipino care worker living overseas, reluctantly accepts a position with PLAN 75 to send money home to her ailing daughter. On the surface, the plan and its hawkers exude a kindness that serves as the film's chilling vision of bureaucratic indifference and our increasing loss of interconnectedness. However, Hayakawa’s view is far from grim, as these characters soon learn to fully reckon with their own lives and what it truly means to live. Read More Read Less

Tim G I think my mild disappointment was how the sci-fi element is really only a backdrop for which to explore aging/community/etc. It's really a small movie in that way, and well done. I had been hoping for something larger though, exploring what this would mean for a society as a whole. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 01/11/24 Full Review Siobhan F This film stayed with me longer than very many films. It definitely opens up a thought provoking lens on euthanasia. As a film, I found it a beautiful, soft, gentle, sensitive film. Deeply sad and yet life affirming. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 12/01/23 Full Review Andrew H H I thought the approach a touch cold, although I suppose the subject matter/situation warranted this. Some smart little touches, that set it apart from the average. Not something I would watch again, but very accomplished. Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 07/22/23 Full Review Sonja W This is a sensitive film with a story idea that is actually utterly plausible. The film does make you reflect on how society treats older people and how the young might develop a more compassionate perspective toward them. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 06/05/23 Full Review Medicine C A unique take on the result of societies that value productivity over wisdom...and one (of many) conclusion: the non-productive are of little value, a weight even. A solution that could have been presented in a positive light, we are instead shown the underbelly of this "solution". And the lack of ease of all participants. Editing was unique, gave us time to integrate the realities presented. All of the vagueness suddenly added up to a very concrete sum. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/18/23 Full Review K W I wish we had a plan 75 here in the USA. Sign me up. Much more dignified to go out like this than through the USA medical route. Sara Merican Sight & Sound Hayakawa’s quietly realist treatment of the dystopian premise makes for haunting viewing. Dec 8, 2023 Full Review Tim Grierson Screen International This is a muted, resigned story about the way that countries and corporations follow their own self-interests rather than helping those most in need. Plan 75 may seem like it’s about ageing, but more accurately it is about the importance of community. Dec 8, 2023 Full Review Mark Kermode Kermode and Mayo's Take (YouTube) It's a very very moving and affecting film... It's terribly distressing, but it's very, very low-key, and it also actually allows itself to have moments of redemption in its later sections. Dec 8, 2023 Full Review Andrew Heskins easternKicks.com Haunting and thought-provoking, but nowhere as grim as it ought to be, this one sticks with you as every great work of science fiction should. Rated: 5/5 Dec 8, 2023 Full Review Christopher Machell CineVue This is strong work for a debut feature, and while not presenting assisted suicide itself with the greatest of nuance, Plan 75 is an accomplished portrait of capitalist alienation. Rated: 4/5 Dec 8, 2023 Full Review Sarah Bea Milner Slashfilm This is not a story about despair -- it's one that inspires hope and, if we're lucky, change.
